My Top Mother's Day Movie Picks

Alexandra Morgan
Whether you're looking for a warm sentimental story of a mother and daughter, a disturbing true-account, or a hysterically satirical view on the Donna Reed type mothers of the world; there's a film here for every Mother's Day movie viewing mood and taste. As you're planning your Mother's Day events for next Sunday, keep these Mother's Day movies in mind for a relaxing home tribute to the mom in your family.

Mommie Dearest (1981)

"No wire hangers!" No one will soon forget this classically delivered film line, or who said it. Mommie Dearest tells the heartbreaking story of Christina Crawford's childhood as the daughter of famous screen actress, Joan Crawford.

Little Women (1949)

If you're looking for a Mother's Day film that's a little more on the side of warm and fuzzy, Little Women is a good pick. I could, and have, watched this film over and over; it's a universal coming-of-age tale. Little Women is based on Louisa May Alcott's book of the same title, which follows a mother raising four daughters in the Northeast during the war. There are several versions available, but to my mind, the only version is the 1949 version starring Elizabeth Taylor.

Anywhere But Here (1999)

A classic single mother raising teen daughter movie with some really great moments between Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman.

Serial Mom (1994)

I don't know about you, but I just can't help loving Kathleen Turner playing the homicidal mom who recycles and knows just what to say at a party in this John Waters flick. I'm sure everyone can relate, to one degree or another, to this satirical look at family and motherhood.

Stepmom (1998)

With this film you'll get two, two, two moms in one. Watch as Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts duke it out for the position of best mom.

Grey Gardens (1975)

This movie is an ode to all things odd and eccentric, and frankly just magnificent film making; truly a must-see. Grey Gardens trains a close lens on Edith Beale Jr. and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale, aunt and cousin respectively, to Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.

The Joy Luck Club (1993)

If you want to kick back and sink in to a three or four hour movie, the Joy Luck Club is a wonderful pick. This film follows several generations of Chinese women through their family struggles, triumphs, and pain. Nearly everything that could possibly happen to a woman is touched on in this film which covers carefully and intricately weaves together the past and present of each of the film's leading ladies.

There you have it, my Mother's Day movie picks. Have a blast this Sunday spending time with your family and Happy Mother's Day to you!

Not sure that your first pick would be one to watch with Mom.
