My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos

Dimmu Borgir is Symphonic Balck Metal...Not Death Metal

Donald Pennington
Very few of my regular readers will feel the slightest bit of attraction to Dimmu Borgir. Dimmu Borgir (Dark Cities, or, Dark Fortresses in English) is a Norwegian symphonic black metal (not death metal) band, formed in 1993, that really pushes the envelope. They put all of the concepts of symphonic black metal, along with amazing musical ability, high-quality video production, and just the tiniest bit of a twisted sense of humor to make Marilyn Manson look like a boy band from the Valley.

Sometimes "Little Bunny Foo Foo" just doesn't fit the mood.

WARNING! The sort of music performed by Dimmu Borgir isn't for everybody. If you're easily offended, immature, or unstable psychologically, then you'll want to eschew reading about Dimmu Borgir any further. If you watch these Dimmu Borgir videos, in spite of this very blatant warning, just keep in mind that it's all make-up and paid actors. With all of that said, here are my top ten favorite symphonic black metal videos from the amazing Dimmu Borgir:

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 10 The Serpentine Offering

Been burned by the church? Tired of getting a guilt trip for feeling the way you do...even though your feelings are just as valid, and maybe more so sometimes, as anyone else's? Here's a little Dimmu Borgir video that will serve to remind you that you're not the only one. No friend. You're most certainly not alone in your ability to read and to understand those history books.

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 9 King of the Carnival Creation (Live Recording)

I offer this Dimmu Borgir video for your viewing pleasure not because it's all that great of a little ditty, which it is, but because it's one of the few live recordings of any band that sounds really good. Somebody knows how to operate a camera.

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 8 Mourning Palace

Can a Dimmu Borgir death metal song come across as sincere? Can symphonic black metal touch the heart of a lone audience member without taking away your hatred for the phoney? You're dang skippy it can. I really hope you don't believe what I just said. But hey...try Mourning Palace on for size anyway. I just made you say "butt hay" in your head.

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 7 The Sacrilegious Scorn

Someone writing for Dimmu Borgir really did their homework for this performance. I like how they represent that the adversary is in the effeminate. Somebody studied their ancient Hebrew it seems. Good job boys.

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 6 The Chosen Legacy

If you're the finicky type who likes a powerful guitar riff, a killer death metal drum roll, and lyrics that you can almost totally understand, then this is the Dimmu Borgir video for you. I'm only half kidding. I really understood most of the words.

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 5 Sorgens Kammer Del. 2
Gotta be honest. I didn't understand one single phrase in this whole song. But, then again, I'm not Norwegian. The best chance of grasping any part of this is if you can "triangulate" the translation from what you understand of the Swedish Chef on the Muppet Show. Just enjoy the rhythm and beat.

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 4 Spellbound

Spellbound (by the Devil) is a simple message...that you've had enough of the false promises of traditional religion. For those who would speak against this band for their image: Beauty can be evil too.

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 3 Vredysbyrd

Here's another fun little song that moves so fast I just couldn't keep up. Also, I've no earthly idea what "Vredysbyrd" even means. The song moves though. Y'know...after a performance these guys must be drained.

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 2 Allegiance

Think you're a death metal fan? Really? This one will make you or break you. All I can say to anyone who watches this video, from start to finish, and you're not a little bit disturbed is: "Welcome to the dark side."

My Top Ten Favorite Dimmu Borgir Symphonic Black Metal Videos # 1 Progenies of the Great Apocolypse

I did this list upside down, and in reverse, on purpose. This video may very well be my all-time personal favorite from Dimmu Borgir. It had to be presented last so that, those who are not interested whatsoever, will have moved on before they get to this Dimmu Borgir video. I can't tell if there's any nudity in it. That's not the point. It's just gruesome...so it's number one!

Congratulations Dimmu Borgir for "Best International Band." You rock.

I avoided this earlier because my laptop and videos do not play nicely with each other, but since you noted that these guys have replaced TMBG in your affections (and I still don't see how that's possible) I have decided to risk computer death and have a look.

OK, I finally got my YouTube up & running and checked some of these out. The music does an excellent job of setting off some amazing videos, but I don't think I'd be too interested in simply listening to a cd.

Interesting list, though it's not really my personal style.

Error corrected Madeline. Thank you hon.

I've never even heard of them.

I watched most of number one just to get an idea of what it is. I hadn't heard of them until now, but I'm not into blood - even the fake kind. Some of the music by Disturbed is as far as I go with the rough stuff. Interesting though.

When it comes to death metal, Dimmu Borgir is an awesome pick. The Norwegian scene is ripe with groups but it is getting a bit commercialized. Great list of videos.

I can just imagine what it's like for Dimmu Borgir to travel on an airline to do those international concerts. Can you imagine?
