My Top Ten Road Trip Songs

I Listened to Many of These on the Road when I was in College and on the Rodeo Trail

This review has brought back some really good memories from when I was in college and traveling with the rodeo team. We almost always had music playing. Some of it of course was to pass the time. Other times it was to help keep us awake when we were not going to get much of a chance to get any sleep. Here are my top ten favorites. Many of these should not really be taken literally. They all have different qualities that assisted them in making my list. Some of them ended up just being listened to and we liked them, so we kept playing them on other trips.

On the road again by Willie Nelson is really good. It's about wanting to be on the highway and off on an adventure. I always had this on the play list when I was traveling. He just can't wait to get out on the road again as stated in the song.

Rodeo Champion and country singer Chris Ledoux was always a favorite of mine as a rodeo cowboy. There were large amounts of songs he has that I listened to on my trips with my friends. Running through the rain was the best. It's about traveling around the country to rodeos and chasing dreams. He says doing that is like "children running through the rain".

The south is gonna rattle again by Hank Williams jr. was another all time favorite. It was always a travel anthem for me. The song is about southern heritage and how the south will rise again. It might never rise again, but is still a great song. As a history note many lawsuits against Obamacare are from southern states. The issue would be states rights and also nullification. Texas has already discussed succession.

Much too young (to feel this damn old) by Garth Brooks is another of my favorites. It's got fast parts and slow parts to it. It's about a guy to rides in the rodeo and is getting older and not as good as he was in his younger days.

Motley Crue's Girls, Girls, Girls is another good one on the road. The song is pretty much about the various strip clubs that the band hit during their various tours and excess on the road. For some reason when I was concerned about the steers or calves I had to deal with the next day a friend always wanted to go to one of the strip clubs when there was one near the place we were staying at.

Highway to hell by AC/DC reminded me of some of the trouble that you could get into to the road. I sometimes wondered if we were on a highway to hell. There was the drinking and the girls and things like that. I am very glad that I got away from that lifestyle and settled down with the right woman.

Marina Del Ray by George Strait is a pretty slow country song. Its about a guy who met a girl in Marina Del Ray and then goes back to Tennessee. He talks about missing her and how they had a good time. This reminds me of a few romances in different towns. One friend of mine was horrible with this and had a lady in every other town it seemed. The heck of it was he had a girlfriend.

Take me home Country Roads by John Denver. This is a slow song about how much the singer loves West Virginia and is waiting to get home to it. He talks about the mountings and the rivers. He also implies the way of life there and how things are old and traditional down pace compared to the big city.

Sweet home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynryd was always one of our favorites since we were all going to school in Alabama. It's all about southern heritage and great state of Alabama. We always liked this one when we were heading home to Alabama after the trip was over.

Uneasy Rider by Charlie Daniels is a bit of a parody than a song, but we really enjoyed it. Since in takes place in Jackson, Mississippi we especially played it when we were going through there on the way to someplace. This song is about a hippy guy from the city whose car breakdown in an area were fine southern gentlemen are (some would call rednecks) and he decided to go to a local dive bar while waiting for his car. Basically he runs into some guys that see he is a hippy type and instead of letting them hassle him the narrative kicks the one guy in the knee and they tries to expose him as a hippie type to the local bar patrons who have known him all of their life. He says the guy he kicked was sent by the FBI in infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. That he tears George Wallace stickers off the bumpers of cars and voted for George McGovern, whom many southern gentlemen believed was a communist. The guy then explains his side a being a faithful follower a Brother John Birch and belonging to a Baptist Church and so forth. While all this is going on the narrator sneaks out. The song is really funny but a bit stereotypical.

Here are ten of my favorites for road trips. There are a large amount of others that could and should be on the list, but these are the top ones that come to mind. There are links to listen to samples of all these songs.
