Centerfield by John Fogerty is a great song that talks about baseball. It's an upbeat rock song with a bit of a slight blues feel. It mentions some greats of baseball like Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio. The moral of the song is that a guy wants to get in the game and tells the coach put him in and he can be centerfield.
The Cheap Seats by Alabama is one of my all time favorites. It is a song about small towns in the middle of nowhere. It has probably one of the best and most accurate choruses of any baseball song dealing with minor league baseball."We like our beer flat as can be. We like our dogs with mustard and relish. We got a great pitcher. What's his name? We can't even spell it. We don't care about the pennant much we just like to watch the boys hit it deep. There's nothing like the view from the cheap seats." This song was almost 100% accurate of the first baseball game I went to when the Wilmington Blue Rocks were playing.
The Greatest by Kenny Rogers is another good song. It's a bit of a slower paced song. When you listen to most of it you would think the song is about a guy trying to hit and ball and each time he tries his best but misses the ball. At the end the kid realizes that he did not know how good he could pitch, so the ball being missed was what he wanted. This is another great all time favorite.
Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meatloaf has a variety of meanings that can be interoperated from listening to it. It's a duet with Meatloaf and a female singer with a bit of a moderate rock blues beat. Basically the guy is trying to get some action from the girl and when they start making out it shifts to baseball. The late legendary New York Yankees announcer and Hall of fame short stop Phil Rizzuto dictates a baseball play by play of the action. Basically the play by play in baseball is about the guy and girl making out. He goes to first, then second, then third. He is about to get to home and then the girl says STOP. Basically she wants to know if she gives it up if he will love her forever. The guy wants to sleep on it. Finally he agrees to love her until the end of time. He says that he is then "praying for the end of time...so I can end my time with you". This song probably describes many examples of how people lose their virginity.
Take me out to the ballgame has been done by various artists. It is usually played by organ with fans singing most often during the seventh inning stretch. It's pretty much a simple speaking type song that mentions the good things about baseball like food and having a great time at a baseball game. It mentions rooting for the home team, peanuts and cracker jacks.
We will rock you and we are the champions by Queen. This has two parts to it. We will rock you is a very upbeat song basically that can get you in a mood for playing. The second part of the song is We are the Champions. When I was in high school we had a bunch odds stacked against us and lost a bunch of our first games. We went on to win the State Championship that year. We played We will Rock You before every game. We did not play we are the champions until we won the Championship. We must have played that six times in a row while we were celebrating.
Enter Sandman by Metallica is a very heavy bordering no hardcore song. This is the music that the New York Yankees star relief pitcher Mariano Rivera enters the stadium while it plays. This usually means lights out for the opposing teams like it did during the 2009 baseball season when The New York Yankees won the World Champions. I like the song in general, but Rivera's use of it makes it that much more popular.
Most people would not think of Back in the New York Groove as a baseball song. The version by Ace Frehley is really good and upbeat. This is something that any Yankees fan that likes KISS or Ace Frehley could get into. It would especially be good for a player who left New York but ended up coming back like when Andy Petite returned from the Houston Astros. He is "back in the New York Grove".
One Moment in Time by Whitney Houston was about the Olympics, but it can apply to any sport. The song is a slower paced song. It deals with things you do to be great like facing pain to have victory. The main thing of the song is that the one moment in time that you get is worth all you put into it to get there.
The theme song from the movie The Natural. I think it's called Chariots of Fire. It is when Robert Redford hits the homerun and knocks a light out and runs the bases. This does not have any sing along words to it, but it is almost synonymous with baseball. It's a good song that any hitter can think about as they are running the bases. They can almost see a homerun that breaks the lights at the stadium. I used to imagine it playing when I hit home runs back in the day.
There you have it my top ten songs for the great game of baseball. I really enjoy most of these watching or playing baseball. This will be a great season coming up for sure. I think the New York Yankees have a really good shot at repeating as World Series champions.
