Tips and Tricks for My Town on Facebook

Jessie Kay
Who hasn't dreamed of running and designing their own city? For most of us, running a city is a pipe dream. That's where My Town, a social networking game on Facebook, comes in. My Town on Facebook brings out the inner urban planner in all of us. Here are some cheats, tricks, tips and FAQs on Facebook's MyTown.

How do I earn money in My Town?
Earn money in My Town by collecting money from each business or house placed in your city. Think of it as taxes! Each home or business has a collection timer. When the timer finishes, the building is outlined in green, indicating it is ready for collection. Click on the building to collect money.

How much time do I have to collect money from buildings?
After the timer expires, you only have a limited amount of time to collect the maximum amount of money. When the building is green, you can collect the maximum amount of money and XP.

The amount of time you have to collect depends on the building. For example, a Suburban home is ready after 4 hours. When the house is ready, you have a 4-hour window in which to collect your money. After 4 hours, your house turns red and you'll receive less money for collecting.

How do I level up?
Level up by building homes and businesses in your city. Each building is worth a set amount of experience points (XP) when built. Buildings also earn XP when they are ready for collection.

Do I earn XP when placing décor?
No, décor is just for looks.

How can I expand my city?
Land expansions require a minimum amount of neighbors. Each land expansion available to you is highlighted in green on the land expansion menu. The first land expansion requires two neighbors. Bypass the neighbor requirement by purchasing land expansions with Town Cash.

When does My Town add new items?
My Town schedules application updates every Thursday. To keep informed of the updates, become a "fan" of My Town and watch your news feed for updates.

What is Town Cash and how do I earn it?
Town Cash is a special currency available in My Town and can be used to purchase special, Town Cash-only items. All My Town players are awarded 5 Town Cash dollars when starting their town. Earn one "dollar" in Town Cash each time you level up. Get Town Cash faster by purchasing it with a credit card.

Are any items free?
Roads and trees are free.

Is there any benefit to adding items such as a school, football stadium, parks or different types of housing in My Town?
Unlike urban simulation games like SimCity, adding schools, police stations, etc., do not provide any benefit to your town, other than gaining XP, money and making it look more realistic.

There's no animation in my city! How do I turn this on?
As of February 2010, My Town does not have any animations. Therefore, you won't see cars or people walking around your city. This makes the game run faster, but unfortunately, it's not very realistic.

Some of us on facebook only have a few friends, so it is impossible to purchase land if you don't have enough neighbors. I think if you have enough coins you shouldn't have to have neighbors to purchase land. I hope My Town creators will change this. I love this application, but I can no longer play because I am out of land!

I'd like to let someone know at MyTown, It's really hard to acquire land. Gifts come in faster than you can acquire the land I need !! Then I'm too crowded to have fun placing the town. I accept the big gifts so that i can collect the money needed to expand. (CATCH 22)
