My True Confessions as a Elementary School Room Mother

Colleen Starr
On a recent field trip with my daughter kindergarten class to the farm, one sweet little boy announced to the class "The cow has a hairy penis." All of the boys broke out in laughter and I was shocked at the words that came out of his mouth. Kids are so honest; they will say anything.

My kindergartner was jealous at first on the days I would come in to school. All of her friends liked me and that was hard for her to deal with. All of the kids argue who gets to sit with me daughter and me when we go to lunch.

I confess I have had a hard time dealing with another volunteer mom. Every time I have a project that I must do with her, I want to scream. The woman drives me up the wall. If I drank alcohol I may due shots after leaving her presence. I grin and bear it but wonder if she has any idea how ridiculous she is. I know she is trying to help in her own special way.

I confess I have so much more respect for my children's teacher when I come in the classroom. I admire the way they can deal with 16 different student personalities. Teachers are amazing and deserve to get paid so much more. Being able to volunteer in the classroom is a wonderful experience. Anyone who has the opportunity to be a room mom should. I love coming in to help with art projects, helping grade math work and go on field trips.
