My Valentine's Day Yahoo! Contributor Network Love Story: Do You Believe in Magic?

John Gugie
I met Karen Bishop this past October in a Facebook group, especially for Yahoo! Contributor Network writers. The group had a chat going on and I was bored, so I made my way there and don't really remember what was discussed because Karen is all that I remember of that night.

Karen and I somehow began talking about magic, one thing led to another and I really became interested in her. For the first few days, I remained cautious as I didn't know her relationship status. Luckily, I stuck with Karen because she was available and right away I jumped at the chance to be romantically involved with her and she reciprocated. We clicked from the very beginning.

Karen and I have so much in common and interact so well that it feels like we've known each other for decades. We're also different enough to not get bored or tired of one another. We seem to have found the perfect combination of similarities and differences.

We are both writers, our sense of humor is almost identical, we share much of the same music interests, we like sci-fi and fantasy (I lean towards horror), we know a little something about many things so our conversations are never boring or awkward, and we have endured the hardships of disabilities.

I have Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, a progressive neuromuscular disorder, and have used a wheelchair since I was eight-years old. Karen injured her leg in 2003 and was diagnosed with RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy), a condition that causes a lot of pain and other problems over time. My time left is limited and RSD can be fatal as well. We both understand this but plan on sharing as much time as possible together while we can and not dwell on the dark facts. Neither of us ignores the other when one of us is feeling particularly down -- we talk each other through it and end up smiling.

Friends and fellow writers have witnessed us sharing our affection on Facebook with countless wall posts and hundreds of links to YouTube videos containing songs with messages to each other. We've made many people smile and have been told our antics are cute, adorable, and a few times been told to get a room. Karen is eight years older than me, so, we get comments about her being a cougar. It's all in good fun and has kept our spirits up as we've endured our own physical pains.

Our relationship has been long distance, with me in Pennsylvania and Karen in Florida, but we see each other almost every day on Yahoo! Instant Messenger and Facebook, and talk on the phone at least twice a week. I can't get enough of her sexy voice and I love to hear her adorable giggle. We hope to have our first in-person visit this summer. Who knows where we'll go from there?

Karen has been very special to me from the beginning. My heart aches whenever we're apart. She tells me how special I am to her every day. It feels very warm inside to finally meet someone I love who loves me back and isn't afraid to share it with everyone. It's also great to have someone to talk to and confide in. She's not only my girlfriend, but also my best friend and has a special reserved VIP section in my heart just for her.

We may have met on Facebook but, if not for the Yahoo! Contributor Network bringing us together through our writing, we would have never met at all. Karen told me that she first saw me on AC back in 2009 but was too shy to talk to me first. Luckily we both decided to chat that one magical night in October which made me believe in magic ever since.

I also must be hormonal or something, because this totally made me cry. You and Karen fell in love with each other right in the aftermath of my divorce, and I've gotta say-- you two have helped me believe in love again. I wish you guys the best.
