My Version of the CBS Show Survivor
Watching People Survive on a Desert Island Has Always Appealed to Me
While watching Survivor is fun, the challenges are often very silly, and after a while they can get a bit monotonous.
The games that get played, messing with people's heads and the loyalties and treacheries that take place, well sometimes it's fun, but sometimes it can be annoying.
What I would really like to see as a reality television show, is a group of people stranded on an island, but apart from maybe some initial supplies or implements to help them get started, I would like to see them survive for several months on their own.
My version of Survivor would not have any head games or contests, no reward challenges, no people being voted off the show, just purely a group of people interacting and finding ways to improve their quality of life.
On the CBS show Survivor, aside from creating an initial shelter to protect them from the wind and rain, there is no point in them improving beyond that, because in a matter of weeks they are likely to be moved to another camp, and all the time there is the possibility of a reward to make their life more comfortable.
But if a group of people knew that they had to survive without help for maybe three months or more, I would like to see just how elaborate an accommodation they might build for themselves, and what they might do in order to be more comfortable.
The primitive shelter might turn into something more like that in the movie Swiss Family Robinson, or Robinson Crusoe, where given the time, and nothing else to do apart from hunting for food, the survivors would find ways to give themselves a better lifestyle.
I imagine that there might be a tree house of sorts, or maybe a decent cabin with a front porch, maybe a swing chair or rocking chairs too.
Provided there was running water close by, the survivors might construct for themselves some kind of shower, and I am sure they would find some way to create a decent toilet facility as well.
Gone I imagine too would be the primitive camp fire with a cooking pot sat on top. I envisage that there would be a permanent fire pit, with a means to suspend a pot over the fire, and to make the heating of water and the whole cooking process more efficient.
There would also be a facility for cooking meat and/or fish, maybe some sort of spit roast, depending on whether there was wildlife in the location.
Fishing after a few weeks would become an art form, with the group developing techniques for catching their prey, and becoming adept at knowing when and where to find them.
I think that this could be a really interesting series, in comparison to the popular reality show with it's fun and games.
So what do you think? Without the typical "silly bits" that go along with so many reality shows these days, do you think that this might be something that could attract a large viewing audience?

I like your version better. I completely agree!
I do like Survivor, but like you (Rose) I wish it could really be about surviving. Far more interesting, and none of the trashy annoying people either.
Before the very first Survivor episode aired, I thought your version was what the show would be like. When I saw what it really was about, I was disappointed and bored with it. I agree that your idea would be much more intriguing.
Yea! I like your version better, a "real" reality show!
How cool is this
I would love to see a show like this, or even be a part of it. It would be very interesting to see how far people are able to push themselves in order to survive. I like the idea behind 'Survivor', but I think it's become far too game showy in the recent years.
@Rita I think that is why they have the version of the show with all the reality competitions in, otherwise the audience would be a lot more limited. @Ellen Not heard of The Colony, sounds interesting.
Have you ever watched the show The Colony? It is kind of like your idea
Neat idea. Without all the competitions and voting, I wonder if it would start to get boring for most people. Maybe it would work better as a documentary, choosing the best parts and showing several months in a couple of hours...the progression from nothing to an elaborate shelter, etc.
