My Version of My Favorite Things: A Song for Ordering Out Dinner

When There is No Time to Cook

Donna Cavanagh
On Monday afternoon, one of my editors asked if I would do a quick turn-around piece for her. Now, I know when this editor says a quick piece, it is never a short one. They usually run about 2,000 words. But she is such a good soul, and she pays well, so I rarely turn her down. With a Wednesday deadline looming, I went to work right away contacting people for interviews and getting my information in line.

Thrown in the mix of this deadline was a doctor's appointment, an emergency run for coffee ( I can't believe I ran out), and my one dog's rabies shot. But by 3:30 yesterday, I was almost done with my article. Usually, it is about this time of the day, I start to seriously think about dinner. Knowing I would have no time to prepare the meal, I IMed my husband at work and said,

"I need dinner ideas. I have to email this article by 5, so I cannot cook until after I'm done."

To this IM, he sent me a list of quick foods he wouldn't mind cooking or ordering out. The list he wrote back was pretty much what he always wants for dinner. I had to wait to respond because my internet went kerflooky (I think that's the technical term). I finally got that back and running and returned to his IM. Then, for some odd reason, as I was reading his suggestions, I started to hum the melody of "My Favorite Things" from the Sound of Music. So, the warped mind that I am, I started to sing out loud which is not a comforting sound in my house. Anyway, this is the song that transpired that sent my dogs running for cover.

Remember, sing it to the tune of My Favorite Things and it will probably help if you picture Julie Andrews dancing and singing with the Von Trapp children. Okay, hit it:

Burgers or hot dogs
No sauerkraut but beans
Omelets or pizza
Is always good it seems
I'm tired of chicken - I might start to cluck
I just lost the internet - oh Damn! Oh F$#K!

(spoken words) Breathe, Donna - inhale, exhale - reset router- internet back - okay back to the song:

Hoagies are welcome
An easy dinner to get
Chinese is okay
Not a meal I would regret
I could boil pasta - but only jar sauce in sight
A few more words, and I kiss this article good night!

When the deadlines loom; when the hour is late
When I'm feeling stressed
I just make a list of my favorite foods
And then I don't feel soooo pressed.

Not exactly true.

Cookies and ice cream
Chocolate cake is good for me
The hubby and daughter
Decide sushi it will be
So down to the kitchen to order raw fish
Don't care as long as I'm not cooking the dish!

When the deadlines loom; when the hour is late
When I'm feeling mad
A call to a restaurant is all that it takes
And then I don't feel sooooooo bad!

There's that wonderful sense of humor we don't get to see very often. The most hated question: What's for dinner, or around here what's for supper? Love this. Only thing is you both come up with many more ideas than we ever have.
