My Visit to the Superb Sunset Point at Mount Abu in India

Taru Mehta
Most of the hill stations in India would have sunset points due to their location in the middle of the mountains. Mount Abu, the famous hill station of Rajasthan State is no exception to that. The sunset point of Mount Abu is one of the best of its kind in the entire country of India. As mount Abu is my favorite hill station, I have visited it on many occasions. I have visited its sunset point on each and every occasion without fail due to its unique beauty and the view that we get of the entire area from this point.

The tourists can easily reach Mount Abu by road from any major cities of the Gujarat and Rajasthan. If you want to travel by train, the direct trains are available from Mumbai for Abu road. This train passes through all the major cities of the Gujarat State like Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad. Mount Abu is only around 15 miles away from the railway station of Abu road. The taxis and the buses can be easily available from Abu road.

There are many hotels at Mount Abu, where one can stay. These hotels are suitable to any type of pocket. The rates for nice double room vary from Rs.200 ($5) to Rs.5000 ($125) per day based on the facilities provided at each. My favorite hotel is Hotel Ashoka, which is situated in the main market. Once you are settled down at the suitable hotel, you can start planning to visit all the site seeing places of Mount Abu. Sunset point stands out from all other site seeing places here. Sunset point can be easily reached by walking from the town center of Abu. It takes around forty minutes to reach the Sunset point by walking.

Make sure to start from your hotel in the town at least one and a half hour in advance of the sunset time so as to reach the point, well in time before the actual sunset. This would also help you in getting nice seats at the point so as to get the best view of the entire range of the mountains. There are stone benches provided at this point for the tourists to sit. Try to select your seat slightly away from the main point to avoid heavy rush of tourists and the disturbance in getting proper view of the sunset. Thousands of visitors collect here in the evening at this point to view the sunset. The sun looks like a large red tomato as it starts setting. The view of setting sun in the background of Arvalli Mountains and the Banas River flowing down below is simply breathtaking.

As soon as the sun sets down, do not make haste to start your return journey as there is a very big rush of people in the beginning. Please allow at least 15 to 20 minutes and then start your return journey. You may prefer to ride on horse during your return journey up to Nakhi Lake. The carts driven by people are also available in case you are tired and do not want to walk any further. If you prefer horse riding, be very careful as there will be many people walking around you and may cause some problems to you. There are no good restaurants available at the sunset point.

In view of this, it is suggested to carry your own mineral water for drinking purpose along with some light snacks like sandwich. Most of the tourists visit Nakhi Lake after their visit to the sunset point. You may also carry torch with you as it will be dark at the time of return and the street lighting is very poor on this road. Also, please try to select a clear day for visiting sunset point as you may not get a clear view on cloudy and rainy days. The road to sunset point is slightly hilly and the old and sick persons must try to avoid walking up to this point.

All the tourists visiting Mount Abu make sure to visit this Sunset point without fail as it is the most scenic and beautiful spot of the tourist's attraction at Mount Abu.
