My Weight Loss Journey: I Admit I've Used Laxatives

Sometimes when You Get Desperate, You Do Desperate Things

Amy Gayle
For the most part, I'm a good girl on my diet. There are days, though, when I have been bad. I look at the scale and I cannot believe when it's not budging or even up a bit. I get a desperate feeling because I have worked so hard and it's going no where!

This is where I got really desperate. I ate terrible and I decided that I'd try taking a laxative to get it all out of me. I don't understand why people do it, because it hurts so bad! Your stomach cramps like a freakin' labor pain, but labor pain is better because it goes away every minute! This is just constant, terrible, stabbing pain until you are able to go to the bathroom.

So you'd think it'd make me stop, right? Nope. I can see why people get addicted to it! It gets you all cleaned out and you lose a little bit of weight. I have taken a few laxatives as a last ditch effort. I don't know why, because it can be so painful! Sometimes, it's not so bad.

I just wanted to be open and honest with everyone about my whole diet experience. Although I don't believe people should abuse laxatives, I am being honest in saying I have used them a few times. Now after a bit of studying up on laxative abuse, I have found out how dangerous it can be!

Here are some of the dangers of abusing laxatives.

-You can upset your electrolyte balance. Electrolytes are minerals in your body that are absorbed by your blood and other bodily fluids. They must be in your system to support your nervous system

-Constipation, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome. Although people use them to regulate themselves during these conditions, they can make it worse if you abuse laxatives!

-Stretched colon or infection. The colon provides a mucus to the bowels, and the laxative will strip the mucus from the colon.

-Dehydration. Naturally, this one is obvious. It makes you go to the bathroom, so naturally, you're going to lose important bodily fluids.

-Death. With the loss of electrolytes, this can cause damage to the muscles and tissues around the heart. The result, a heart attack. Also, severe dehydration can also lead to death!

I do not promote or condone the use of laxatives! I am just being real in saying that I have used them. They haven't been a pleasant experience for me and they were last ditch efforts. I have now started running in exchange for using them. Always eat right and exercise. If you are still having problems, then talk to your physician for medical help!
