My Weight Loss Journey: Week 1

Going from Flab to Fab

In modern day America, gaining weight is quite easy to do. It's a no-brainer that as a society, we are much more sedentary than our ancestors. While technology is amazing in so many ways, it has eliminated the need for physical labor. This lack of exercising, combined with the zillions of fast food establishments and varieties of fatty convenience food, have led to many of us weighing more than we desire. Myself included.

Let me give you a brief background of myself without boring you senseless. I'm a 20 year old college student. 5'5" to 5'6", depending on the day and the shoes. I have always been a curvaceous woman; I was wearing a bra in second grade. I weighed 130 pounds in fourth grade. I was never really obese, just... thick. As I reached puberty and subsequent adulthood, my weight stabilized around 145 pounds. While that is still a healthy and average weight, I was never 100% pleased with the number or my figure. I have a tummy. While I appreciate my hips and my breasts, there is definitely some room for improvement.

I packed on close to 20 pounds since July 2007, when I began taking Paxil. I reached an all-time high weight of 163 pounds, and on January 26th, 2008, I said "no more" and joined Weight Watchers Online.

Now I've tried calorie counting many times on my own, and Weight Watchers is essentially just calorie counting. But something about it appealed to me; whether it was the support of doing something with countless others, the easy of not counting calories but points, or the fact that it was something I had not tried before, I'm not sure. Whatever the reason, I tried it. I was allotted 23 points a day at first.

Let me tell you, January 26th was probably not the best day to begin a new lifestyle (I won't say diet). Just so happens I was invited to a Pampered Chef party where gooey, caramel, nutty, chocolatey brownies were served. But I somehow, perhaps still riding on the high provided by my new Weight Watchers membership, resisted. I chomped on celery and Diet Coke and congratulated myself inside.

Throughout my first week of my weight loss journey, celery began my new best friend. No, it wasn't all I ate, but I found how great of an appetite suppresser it is.

I decided to make my weigh-in days Mondays, since for me, it is the start of the school week. On the 29th, which I will consider Week 1, I weighed in at 160.5 pounds. Not too shabby.

And the journey continues...

STARTING WEIGHT: 163 pounds
CURRENT WEIGHT: 160.5 pounds
GOAL WEIGHT: 135 pounds
