My Wireless Signal Keeps Dropping at Home - What Can I Do?

Lance Esondi
One very frustrating part about using a computer is when you are trying to surf the internet and have your wireless signal constantly drop on you. When you need to get some work done or research for your homework, the situation is even worse when you can't get a solid signal to stay on the internet at the speeds that you are paying for.

If this keeps happening to you, there are some solutions to help you improve the situation significantly by making some changes.

The first issue is the location of your router. Many aren't putting this in the center of the home. When it's in the center, the whole home should get a better signal.

If your router is very old, the technology that it has inside might be behind what your current computers are using. Today's technology is using wireless N instead of the old B and G. If your router is many years old with a newer computer, this is likely the problem. You will have to upgrade the router. This will give you a larger and stronger signal. Also new routers aren't as effected by things in the home like the microwave or cordless phones since they are dual band being able to jump to another bandwidth if need be.

On your personal machine, you could have a driver issue with your wireless card. This is likely if one computer never gets bumped off while another is constantly losing the signal. Reinstall the driver. If this doesn't work, make sure the wireless card is installed properly.

If the card is very old in your machine, it's time to upgrade. The easiest upgrade for a laptop or desktop are the small USB routers that you can purchase. These normally are around $50 and are less than half an inch long. You can get the latest technology in a good wireless card without any complicated installation making it easy on you.
