My Worst Bridesmaid's Dress Ever!

The Unpleasant Dress for an Unpleasant Time

Paula Andra
My roommate got married several years before I did. At first, I was a bridesmaid. Then I was off the wedding because I'd asked her why her sister wasn't in the wedding. Then I was back on the wedding. Then I was the maid of honor. Then when it finally came time for the wedding, I was bumped back to bridesmaid while her best friend became the maid of honor, even though I'd done all of the work. I decided that this would not happen at my wedding.

When it came time for my wedding, The woman I lived with, at the time, became my matron of honor because she would be doing all of the work. My best friend wasn't even in the wedding. She wouldn't have been matron of honor if she had been there since she couldn't have done any of the work. I also let my attendants choose their own wedding garments in their favorite colors, since they planned to use them after the wedding. Which they did.

My roommate, at first, had thought to have us in full length red velvet gowns, since the wedding was a winter wedding. But she opted for forest green wool flannel full length gowns, instead. Her best friend's dress was done by the lady who did the wedding gown. I had to make my own dress. I'd learned to sew when I was a child and have sewn a lot of my clothing in the past. But I didn't have the time to make my brides maid dress. I'd cut it out and had started sewing on it. But my roommate kept changing her mind on things and I had to keep redoing what I'd already done for her wedding.

This was true for most of us who were helping her with the wedding. We had to redo some things several times since she kept changing her mind. She didn't just have us change to something else. But several times we'd have to go back to the original plan after it had been replaced by another and start over. It was a miracle that the wedding actually took place on schedule considering that she broke up or almost broke up with her future husband several times.

During this time, I was also working and going to school, so I had to do a lot of juggling to keep on top of everything. I'd set the dress aside, hoping I'd have time to finish it before the wedding. But things were getting so complicated with my roommate, her sister, the wedding, work and school that a month before the wedding I asked a friend for help.

She'd mentioned, earlier, that she had a friend who could sew my dress for me, for a small price. I wasn't sure, when she'd first offered, since this friend was unpredictable. But later I asked for help. She said that she would contact her friend. By the time she was able to get in touch with her and to get her to agree to help me, we had less than two weeks to get the dress done before the wedding. While I was working on the wedding, and the time was moving closer to the wedding, I asked how the work on the dress was going. I was told that it was almost done.

The day of the wedding, I received my dress back. Yes, all of the pieces were attached in the right places. Yes the zipper was properly sewn. Yes, the empire waist, the sleeves, the gathering of the skirt and the hem were all done right. The lace was even in the right places at the neck and on the sleeve cuffs. However,.. for some really strange and unexplainable reason for which I've never received a satisfactory answer, all of the raw edges in the yoke were stitched flat over the bodice. All of the raw edges were out in the open on the surface of the bodice.

It was the funkiest and most amateurish looking piece of work, definitely not worthy of a wedding. But there wasn't a single thing I could do about it, but put it on and wear it. I didn't have time to repair it. I hoped that since the event was an evening wedding in candle light that the dress wouldn't be that noticeable. It also helped that the dress was so dark in color. My best friend was the only one who said anything, since she also did her own sewing.

Needless to say, I definitely don't have any photos of this dress. Neither do I have the dress, since I really didn't want a full length wool dress, especially in such a dark green. I did set it aside for a while thinking that I might try
to fix it or salvage the fabric for something else. But, I never did. I don't remember what happened to it, except that at some point I no longer had it.

I planned to teach college art in studio & history. But I needed to home school our son and did short term missions instead, which benefited from my education. I write about the trips I take for our ministry.  View profile
