My New Year's Eve Music Playlist

C. Moss
New Year's Eve can be fun. However, without a great playlist to liven up a party, let's face it, it's just not as lively. There are plenty of tunes that one could listen to just for this night alone to get the party going. However, some songs don't have to have a connection with New Year's directly. The music itself may have enough of an up tempo so that one could be in the moment, or possibly just dance to. Here's my top 10.

'Oh! Gravity' by Switchfoot

This song is great because of its fun lyrics and the tune is energetic enough to bring in the new year. I guarantee that this will end up being a favorite with the crowd. My personal favorite part of the lyrics are:

'Oh! Gravity!

Why can't we seem to keep it together?

Sons of my enemies,

Why can't we seem to keep it together?

Why this tragedy?

Why can't we seem to keep it together?

Oh! Gravity!

Why can't we seem to pull it together?'

'Good Life' by Kanye West

'50 told me go 'head switch the style up

And if they hate then let 'em hate

And watch the money pile up, the good life'

With lyrics like this and an incredible melody, it's hard to not have this song on this list. It will put a smile on your face and have everyone moving to the beat.

'Dance Dance' by Fall Out Boy

'Dance, Dance

We're falling apart to half time

Dance, Dance

And these are the lives you'd love to lead

Dance, this is the way they'd love

If they knew how misery loved me'

I think by now everyone has heard this song at least once or twice. To me, the beginning is the best because it automatically draws you in.

'The Devil's Haircut' by Beck

This is by far one of the best songs from the 90s. Beck has a lot of songs that has a party vibe to them. But I think when most people think of Beck they remember this song almost instantly, while it has the perfect beats for a party atmosphere.

'Something's wrong 'cause my mind is fading

And everywhere I look there's a dead end waiting

Temperature's dropping at the rotten oasis

Stealing kisses from the leprous faces'

Auld Lang Syne

This song is a classic. But where did it come from? A man named Robert Burns wrote the lyrics some time back in the 1700s. This traditional song is usually played immediately after the countdown has halted. It marks a new year and a fresh start. The best part about this song is the fact that most people never seem to know the lyrics completely. Ever hear someone quietly slur the words together as a cover up? These are the actual words to this timeless song.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We'll take a cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne

Most people may not know this, but these are the rest of the lyrics.

We twa hae run aboot the braes

And pou'd the gowans fine;

we've wander'd mony a weary foot

Sin' auld lang syne

We two hae paidled i' the burn,

Frae mornin' sun till dine;

But seas between us braid hae roar'd

Sin' auld lang syne

And here's a hand, my trusty friend,

And gie's a hand o' thine;

We'll take a cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We'll take a cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne

'Waiting On The World To Change' by John Mayer

I don't think that most people associate Mr. Mayer's work with party atmospheres. However, I can say that this song defintely has it's way of charming you. Persoanlly, I like turning the volume up to full blast.

'So we keep waiting (waiting)

Waiting on the world to change

We keep on waiting (waiting)

Waiting on the world to change

It's hard to beat the system

When we're standing at a distance

So we keep waiting (waiting)

Waiting on the world to change'

'The Middle' by Jimmy Eat World

'Hey,

Don't write yourself off yet.

It's only in your head you feel left out,

Or looked down on.

Just try your best,

Try everything you can.

And don't you worry what they tell themselves

When you're away.'

Back in 2001 we were introduced to this catchy song. Most people hadn't heard of Jimmy Eat World, but soon knew them because of the amount of radio play it had.

'When I Grow Up' by Garbage

'Don't take offense

Better make amends

Rip it all to shreds and let it go'

This is by far a classic from this alternative band from the 90s. It's not quite an 'I don't care' song, but the playful lyrics have you thinking otherwise. I dare you to not try and sing the songs after you've heard the bridge.

'Helicopter' by Bloc Party

'Hungry and dumb, hungry and dumb (so wait in line)

Queuing up for some more junk food

It's not my fault, it's not my fault (just this once)

They're getting so much younger'

'Are you hoping for a miracle?'

Bloc Party has been around for a little while now, but they've already found a spot on my music playlist. This song may not be the best from their albums, but it definitely has a knack for entertaining. It's killer guitar riffs, rhythm, and vocals make this song unbelievably cool.

'Anytime' by Eve 6

'There's a place where I go to take the edge of the day, when the radios up your

face fades away, flicker flicker dim and fade to black.'

'Got no time reason or rime, not gonna stop, gonna ride all night'

Eve 6 has been around for years. However, this is the song I will always remember them by. Why? Because the rhythm is amazing. The singer, Max Collins, has a way of getting you to become more involved in what he's saying. I think this would end up being a crowd favorite.
