My New Year's Fitness Resolution and How I Plan to Keep It

The Last Ronin
Okay, so we are already 18 days into the new year but that is no reason not to still be thinking about resolutions. Like the millions of other people out there I too have a resolution and it is one of the more common ones. My resolution for 2010 is to get into better shape. Now I wouldn't consider myself to be in bad shape by any means, but I also know that there is room for improvement. So, it is my hope for 2010 to decrease my body fat, increase my muscle mass, my strength, power, and cardiovascular conditioning. These may seem like very vague goals, but I have learned over the years (especially with fitness) that it is best not to confine yourself with narrow goals, because it usually leads to failure.

There are many ways I could go about keeping my new years resolution, but I have narrowed it down to 5 that I believe will be the best for me.

1. Participate in an activity that enjoy that allows me to have fun and stay in shape. If you pick an activity that you enjoy then you are going to want to be there. You won't think about it as traditional exercise or something negative, but a place you truly want to be. My activity of choice is martial arts. I love training in martial arts and it is a great way for me to stay in shape.

2. Drink more water. I absolutely love to drink ice cold Coke. Honestly I would prefer it over water, but that's not good for me. So in order for me to decrease my body fat I am going to cut back on the Coke and add more water into my daily regimen

3. Keep a training notebook. In order to see my progress and know how far I have come I plan on keeping a training notebook. In this notebook I will chart my weight, body measurements, days I train, how I feel, and anything else I feel pertinent to achieving my goals. If you have a fitness goal for the new year I suggest keeping a training notebook.

4. Going to bed earlier. You might wonder how this is going to help me lose weight and build muscle? A good night's rest is going to give me more energy to complete my workouts, keep me in a positive frame of mind, and give my body a chance to rest from all of the training.

5. Reduce the amount of fast food I eat. Essentially I would like to eliminate all fast food from my diet, but I'm a realistic person and understand that there will be times when I'm just going to have to (or want to) consume some fast food. In order to lose the fat and build up my muscle I am going to try to reduce the number of times I go to a fast food restaurant.

Hopefully, if you have a resolution that is similar to mine then this article will help you out. The most important thing to help you keep your resolution is a positive attitude.

I am a HUGE mixed martial arts fan and try to watch it (or read about it) as much as I can. My obsession began in 2002 when I started training and grew more intense when I saw my first UFC event (Hughes vs G...   View profile
