MyGoldEnvelope.Com: A Website Review

What to Expect when You Want Cash from Your Gold

I saw the ad on television. I've seen several similar ads that seemed too good to be true. But this one had a realistic ring to it. There was a calibrated gold meter on the screen that read "14K". That seemed scientific. None of the other sites had anything similar.

You see, I had been to a local 'gold buyer' and had bad results. My 'solid gold leaves' turned out to be plated. Or, so the 'jeweler' said. He just looked at them. "There are no gold markings on them," he said; nothing else. I wanted them to be valuable. I chose not to believe him.

I went to another gold buyer. They were closed on Sunday, the day I chose to sell.

I went to still another. The business was gone, evaporated.

So, I wrote down the TV website: mygoldenvelope.com. It sounded simple. Put your gold in the envelope and send it. If it's valuable, they will pay for it.

I went on line and gave the site my address. That was two days ago. I got the kit today.

The kit contains a Ziploc bag with a tracking number on it, which I am to write down. There is a plastic mailing envelope labeled for prepaid postage and a card to fill in with the same tracking number on it.

The outside of the kit states that the business is approved by the Better Business Bureau. They have a physical address: 970 West Broadway #492, Jackson, WY 83001. There is a free number to call: 1-800-973-3996.

A statement says to remove all stones, not to send costume jewelry or silver, and not to send anything of sentimental value, since it will be melted down.

Today is July 30, 2009. I am sending about one ounce of what I think is real gold. Let's see what happens.

Dear Valued Customer,

We received your recent submission at our refinery. Each individual piece was professionally assayed using our state of the art spectrum analyzer to determine gold content.

Your entire submission was non-precious jewelry - Gold-Plated, Gold-Filled, or Gold-Leaf pieces (often referred to as "costume" jewelry).

It is stated in our published Terms and Conditions, My Gold Envelope does not accept Gold-Plated, Gold-Filled, or Gold-Leaf pieces because they don't have any liquidation value ($0).

In the future, please refer to the FAQs at our corporate website for additional information http://www.mygoldenvelope.com/FAQ.aspx

Specifically, before you attempt to liquidate your gold, you should always look for what is known as a Quality Mark on each item. By United States law, a "k" mark representing karat must appear on the back of an authentic gold piece, along with the manufacturer's trademark and country of origin to guarantee the authenticity of the gold.

If you would like these items returned, please email us a return request at info@mygoldenvelope.com. You can also call our customer service at 1-800-973-3996 to put in a return request with a live agent.

We look forward to serving you in the future.
