What to Do and Where to Go on Your Mykonos Vacation

Jessica Writes
Overview
Mykonos is an island of Greece, situated among the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. Mykonos' streets are labyrinth-like, built that way in order to thwart the pirates that plagued the town in the 18th and 19th centuries. Expect to get lost as you wander the city streets on foot -- a cab will bail you out once you're finished exploring for the day. At the city's shoreline lies Alefkándhra, commonly known as Little Venice, an artsy district packed tightly with art galleries and upscale clubs. In the city's center you'll find such attractions as the Archeological Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Folklore Museum and Paraportianí. And, just off the coast of Mykonos is Delos. Delos is a short ferry ride away and is notable for its ancient temples.

Sightseeing Attractions
Mykonos' landmark is the Windmills, one of the most valuable sightseeing attractions in the city. Little Venice is popular for its Venetian houses and brightly-colored balconies that extend right to the water's edge. Petros the Pelican lives at the waterfront. The pelican was first found in the 1950s and was later replaced when the original Petros passed away. The Tría Pigádhia fountain is also a popular tourist destination. Legend states that if an unmarried woman drinks from the fountain's water, she will soon later find a husband.

Outdoor Activities
Mykonos is home to many beautiful beaches where activities such as swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, sunbathing, and boating are common. Some of the notable beaches include Agios Ioannis Beach, Psarou Beach, Platys Gialos Beach, and Ornos Beach. Many of Mykonos' beaches are either fully or partially nudist, including Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, Elia Beach, and Paranga Beach. If you're traveling with children, you may want to steer clear of these beaches.

Nightlife
Mykonos' nightlife is bustling, but it is also very pricey. Little Venice is a good place to find a decent restaurant, and traditional Grecian foods are in plenty. You'll pay a decent amount of money for even a small meal, but you're very likely to be satiated for hours due to the heaviness of the local cuisine. It is also the best place for an early cocktail, though most of the locals move closer to the city's center for late night partying. In the city's center, you'll find many bars and clubs, most of which offer some type of live music and charge a decent cover. Mykonos is also home to several after-hours clubs for the all night partiers.
