Mylot is a Waste of Time - a Counter Point

Is Mylot Really a Waste of Time?

Deepak
The other day I happen to come across an article, which attracted my attention. Its heading was 'Mylot is a waste of time'. The article was published on this very site and many persons posted their comments on that article, which were for and against that article. The writer of the article expressed her opinion about mylot and her conclusion was that it was sheer waste of time working on this website. She was of the opinion that despite posting quality replies she could not get expected earnings from the site and the method of calculating earnings was also not clear or transparent and beyond her comprehension. She did not highlight any of the positive aspects about mylot. Her conclusion was that after joining this site she felt that she wasted her time and did not get the desired results.

I differ with her opinion. I think the writer of that article was an established or say an expert 'writer' who can express her opinion very effectively, through her writings; therefore, a site like mylot was not as per her standards or expectations. She also presumed that earning money through writing is the prime motive of all the persons who join Mylot.com. She may be correct in her opinion, but I feel that even if mylot pays for posting and replying to discussions, everyone does not necessarily join mylot for the sake of earning Dollars. I joined mylot one year ago and I found the site was very interesting, lively and vibrant. Undoubtedly earning Dollars through our replies to the discussions is one of the most attractive aspects of this site and majority of persons join this site for earnings, but not all the members do so. Incidently, some of the similar sites do not pay anything for posting discussions or replies to the discussions, therefore, Mylot has more than one lakh members and new members join it every day.

I have a feeling that when we express ourselves through our responses and posts on Mylot, our thinking pattern and mindset widens. While interpreting the responses to the discussions, I came to know, that though we all are human, but our views and thoughts while posting a reply can vary because we have faced different experiences in our life. Our upbringing is dissimilar. We grow up in different conditions. We live in different countries and different environment so our opinion on a post varies. I felt that while going through other members responses, my vision broadened and my attitude towards life became more positive because I could observe that a problem or a situation can be gauzed from a different angles. Whenever I discussed any problem of mine through my discussions, the problem was viewed and anlysed from different angles and I received different but logical responses. Out of which I could choose the most suited reply to my situation and could sort out my problem.

My view is that many of us are not established or professional writers. Many of us are amateur writers, who are very raw in expressing ourselves. Discussions at Mylot give us an opportunity to express ourselves to the best of our ability without any inhibition. I did not feel hesitant or shy while sharing my views on an issue and I found my opinion and thoughts match with other members on the site.

While posting our replies we not only widen our sphere of knowledge, we learn how to use English language more appropriately and effectively to put forth our point of view. I also learnt how to write a meaningful and effective response to a post, how to pen my chain of thoughts in a logical and sensible manner. I mean we keep learning, while expressing ourselves time and again. Also, in this manner we keep sharing our knowledge.

After replying to many posts and participating in the the discussions I felt that I got connected to so many persons instantly, who not only read my thoughts but share their thoughts too. Getting connected to unknown persons and during the course of time developing a bond between each other is one of the distinct advantages of mylot. After participating in the discussions started at Mylot, for few months, I came into contact with different kinds of members on the site. I found that some were like me and some were dissimilar. I added some of like minded members in my list of friends and vice versa. Gradually, some of them became my intimate friends. They were not only from my own country but they were from other countries too. Had I not joined this site, where would have I got so many friends with whom I can discuss my joys and sorrows and who also help me solving me some of my complex problems and vice versa.

Through out my period spent at mylot I continued to exchanged my views and thoughts with friends over there and tried my best to learn from their view point and experiences. I noticed that our problems were similar, irrespective of their countries. Most of the members or participants think alike and they share identical problems. Interestingly, the responses and suggestions offered for a particular problem raised in the Mylot discussions, were also somewhat similar, I found.

My regular participation in the discussions, started at Mylot by the members, helped me a lot. It helped me widening my thinking, it helped me becoming more receptive and broad-minded. I found that there are some very interesting members who are like minded and get connected to me very quickly. I feel that when we share our problems and other information, a kind of bond gets established between us and we start feeling secured. Participating in the discussions and venting out my feelings acted as a stress buster for me. I felt that if I have a problem, I did not need to go to a Counsellor, I can discuss it through my discussion and sort it out. Sharing my concerns with others through discussions helped me resolved my many issues. Responses from many members counselled me and it helped de-stress myself. Positive reactions from others to my posts invoked a kind of assurance in me and relieved me from my tensions.

I have a strong notion that those who wish to express themselves and are amateur writers and those who wish to learn from others should join mylot to see the difference in themselves. The one, who is only interesting in earning money, may not join the website, because they might feel disappointed after seeing the slow rate of earnings. The one, who feels lonely, isolated, detached and wishes to get connected to similar kind of persons, should become a member of Mylot.com. I think this will really help him improve upon himself.

I love this article Deepak. You have described my feelings about MyLot very accurately. The friendships made there are priceless and as far as the money goes, it's a bonus and it's more than what is obtained clicking ads on PTC sites and the enjoyment factor cannot be compared.

Interesting and well put together article Deepak. As they say, to each his own. Someone who wants to earn and has a paucity of time would not go for websites like MyLot

What I dislike about Mylot most is the fact that so many of the people are very nasty. If they disagree with you, they will follow your discussion and respond in a very nasty way and rate you negatively as often as they can. No, thanks.

Thanks for the article. It was good to hear a counterpoint. As an English teacher I found participating in myLot discussions to bear a bit too much resemblance to responding to my students' work, as may myLotters are working on improving their English. Since I work on correcting English and attempting to understand non-fluent speakers most of the day, I'd rather spend my time on AC. But you're right, everyone has their own preference and different goals in writing/posting online.

well, i read also her article but i have no interest to give my comments. I love mylot even sometimes there are some glitches..I met different personalities, views and i found a friend. There are some regular and common members that i encountered everytime i post my topic. They are always there and i appreciated them for that.. Even though i don't have a hundreds of reply or even fifty's i should say to it that my posts are with quality....and i am eager to responsed my friends comments to my discussions. having a conversations to the individuals that come from the different countries is great! Through mylot i can express easily of what inside my mind..There are some issues that i couldn't express in real but i can express it in mylot. I am greatful to be a part of mylot society....

Hello Deepak. So nice to see so many mylotters here. I liked your article and your point about the naysayer perhaps finding that mylot did not meet her more professional standards, though valid, actually made me think that she was not so professional afterall or she would have read the guidelines before joining and realized that mylot is basically a social site, not a site for professional writers. AC and sites like Helium are more in line with her expectations and I think she would do better there. Many people join mylot, more for the social aspect. The fact that for a paid to post forum, it pays very well is a wonderful bonus. The real appeal of mylot though, is it's unique, almost real time ability to interact with other users outside of a chat room venue. If one finds oneself online at the same time as friends, discussions can get very lively indeed and it is so much fun to be able to 'carry on' in an atmosphere of fun and silliness and even seriousness when the topic calls fo

In my view you have done an excellent job in presenting a well rounded 'perspective' of Mylot. I have been an active member there for 10 months and discovered the same things you have. It is an ethical, well run site that pays members for doing what they love anyway. Your views are well presented and you have a good writing style. Wishing you continued success in all your writing goals...wherever they are. Keep up the good work..you have a lot to say...and do it well.

    Warm regards,
    Raia

Interesting point of view. I really did not care for MyLot, but I didn't give it much time to decide, I guess. It's all based on personal preference though, I guess. I have heard people say they love it but others who say they hate it. To each his own.
