Myrtle Beach Legislature Proposed Budget Cuts Will Wound the Economy and Place a Burden on Local Residents

One of the worst things that could happen to the Myrtle Beach area besides being struck with a category 5 hurricane is to have budget cuts that will have a profound negative affect on the local economy. The U.S. economy has been in a steady decline for the past seven years, and Myrtle Beach has been feeling the pinch of the economic fallout. Myrtle Beach has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation, they are ranked in the top 5 cities which have lost manufacturing jobs, construction building jobs, retail jobs, and public works, and the future outlook seems not to be too bright.

The city itself has been experiencing a lot of controversy concerning mismanagement of funds, legal problems of public officials stealing funds appropriated for public works programs. Myrtle Beach last years budget fell short in respect to the city's fiscal debt. The proposed budget cuts will affect the Chapin Memorial Library, city planning, new police vehicles, public works new positions, city advertising, recreation centers, and many other things that will have a profound affect on how the city operates in 2010-2011.

City Council members have suggested that making local residents pay a $3.00 parking fee at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center who normally get the parking for free, this would also apply to tourist who visit the convention center. There are also other taxing proposals in the works that most local residents do not approve of.

The budget cuts do hamper the city's growth for 2010-2011, it also plays a damning role in how public works make or break a city. It seems that Myrtle Beach is going backwards instead of moving on into the future with bright plans and ideas that will make it a better place for all the residents who live in this summer resort area.
