MySpace a Friendly Site to Meet People and Have Fun

Online Community Site Does Not Cater to Children

Linda M. McCloud
If you watch the news, I am sure you have heard about myspace.com. If you are a parent, this site may worry you. But have you been to myspace.com?

First, myspace.com is like many sites on the internet. It is a site for people to come together. This is not necessarily a bad thing. The intention of this site is not for people to do wrong to each other or to engage in wrongful activities.

Most of the news accounts also center around children. First, of all, myspace.com does not cater to children. When you sign up for an account with myspace, you must first register. When registering, you sign a term of service agreement. Part of this agreement states that you must be over the age of 14. If myspace administrators believe a person is under this age, they will revoke your privileges and account. Does this mean a child will not lie and get on this site? Of course, they can lie. But is this the sites responsibility to watch the children or the responsibility of the parents?

If you go on to read the term of service it states other important details that if read can keep a person safe. It warns that you should never give out your real name, address, phone number to strangers.

Now what is myspace? It is a place where you find and communicate with old and new friends. It is also known for a great place to hear new bands and singers. They can add their tracks onto this site and people can hear them. What a concept! A place where new artists can be heard.

But it isn't just for new artists. You can place your profile, you can write about your interests, you can upload a photograph of yourself, if you wish, from there you can mark what search for people to introduce yourself to and hopefully will become your friends. You can make it clear that you are looking for just friends. You can say you are looking for someone to date or more. Whatever.

Like many other friendship sites, there are blog sites, group sites, chat rooms, classified areas (where you can sell your car, hire a gardener, whatever).

The newest area of myspace is the comedy area. This is a place for comedians to show off their talent, too.

This is what makes myspace different than all the rest of the friendship groups out there. Entertainers have a chance to show off their talent. They have a place to talk to other entertainers. They can learn from each other here. Where else can someone from New York so easily hear a band from LA perform? With a medium like this, it can make it easier for people to become discovered. If nothing else, it is a place to have fun.

Can it be a bad place? Of course, it is after all centered on the internet.

When online, you must be careful. You don't know who is chatting with you. The person may be a drum player like he says. Yet, he could be a pervert. You must take precautions.

If you on myspace because you a performer and you are asked to audition, use your brain. Don't meet anybody alone. Meet in public. Never give strangers your home address or phone number. Be sensible.

If you are parent and your child is using the internet, warn him/her of all internet sites, myspace included.

Is myspace worse or better than the rest, probably no on both accounts. It is just the one the media is centered on at the moment. It is a popular site, that makes it a target.

If you want to use it, just be internet smart.
