"As the country's most trafficked Web site, MySpace will play a powerful role in the upcoming election," said CEO Chris DeWolfe. Yet what will that roll be aside from tabulating MySpace friends?
Over the course of the week, most within hours of the MySpace Impact launch, the following results could be found.
PC World Canada - Romney, McCain and Clinton with 1,000 MySpace friends, "while Obama had more than 68,000." "Giuliani's profile was set to 'private' and so it could not be publicly seen."
Honolulu Advertiser - "Obama beats rivals when it comes to MySpace 'friends', "and touts the number of Obama's MySpace friends at 68,412.
"Barack Obama: President of MySpace," claims a U.C. Berkley Math student nicknamed Seema. Seema developed a graph of the presidential candidates and their MySpace friends. Obama leads by four-digit percentage points according to his calculations.
Newsweek -- Commentary posted on MSNBC begins "I made a strange new friend today on MySpace. Her name is Hillary Clinton. Frankly, we don't have a lot in common. For one thing, she's 59. I'm 24"
The actual numbers tell a different story. As of March 25th, 2007, if you click on the MySpace Impact presidential candidates links, the following results are found: "Hillary has 4220 friends, Barack Obama has 80402 friends."
If however you conduct a people search on MySpace for the respective candidates a whole new set of figures is found under various MySpace profile IDs. Hillary Clinton has 16476 friends, Hillary Clinton 2008 has 31,100 friends, Barack Obama has 11651 friends, and Barack Obama has 80606 friends.
While Barack Obama may be the MySpace friend leader, Hillary Clinton is far from friendless and makes a strong MySpace Presidential candidate.
It remains to be seen if MySpace Impact will have any real impact on younger votes, but TheSpoof.com maintains that "MySpace visitor usage has increased to over 113 percent, with the majority of visitors registering under the names Dick Cheney, Richard Cheney, Ricky Boy Cheney, Ricky Bobby Cheney and George W. Bush."
Candidates with pages on MySpace thus far include: Democratic Senators Hillary Clinton of New York, Barack Obama of Illinois, Joe Biden of Delaware, Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, and John Edwards, former North Carolina senator and 2004 vice presidential candidate as well as Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
Libertarian Ron Paul also has a page that is no longer in last place with 1466 MySpace friends.
