MySpace: Is This What Friendship Has Become?

Candace
I have a friend Michelle from college, well I had more than one friend but this story is about one friend in particular. She and I met through a mutual friend Julie sometime during our Junior year and since we had similar majors we could relate to each others academic life and vent about the accents of the foreign professors. College years were great, we were three single girls, juggling men and classes having a great time. Well graduation came around and Julie moved to the Midwest for graduate school.

Then it was two girls against the world, but not really. See Julie was the only one to graduate on time. Michelle had a class to retake and I was on the five year plan. So it was Michelle and I in Atlanta. It was super convenient that we ended up marrying best friends.

So we as two couples were pretty close. Michelle's mom even went as far as to call us one extended family. Well a few years later things started to unravel. We were spending less time together but that happens. Her marriage ended, time went on, she has reorganized her life.

But a little more about me. When I left for college in '93 my Mom challenged me to find a woman that I could be close to. Even as a teenager she recognized that I tend to cut people off. It's easy for me to maintain friendships when I'm around the person on a regular basis. Classmates, co-workers, other mom's from the kids activities. That random phone call to a person I haven't seen in six months is hard for me.

So I found Myspace. It's cool because I put my picture up and register myself with the schools I've been to and people find me. About once a month I hear from someone that I haven't heard from since college or high school. So I'm there today poking around looking to see if there is anyone new, and I notice that Michelle has changed her profile picture to a sonogram picture. It turns out she's pregnant with her second child. We haven't talked in a year or two so I guess it is time for me to pick up the phone and catch up on all the changes in her life. Be as good of a face to face as I am a virtual one.

I've had people contact me on Myspace who never even spoke to me in high school. It's definitely a different world now.
