MySpace Hones on 'Gen Y' with a Makeover

The unveiling of a redesigned interface by MySpace and its new logo was presented to U.S. internet users Oct. 27th , 2010.

The global deployment of this "new " version of the music site is gradual and will be available to all users worldwide by the end of November.

MySpace, a site owned by News Corp., brought a large number of changes to its site. This update is actually a reorientation of its activities. Previously regarded as a social network, MySpace wants to become a "social entertainment experience generated by the passion of its members," rather than a meeting between friends.

The center stage of the new streamlined interface of MySpace emphasizes an incentive to share content by members. Users can share the update of their status, photos, videos, music, games, et cetera.

The introduction of a loyalty program will reward the most active users of the music site.

In addition, changes to the site have been designed to attract new customers, Generation Y (or 14 to 35 years). Generation Y refers to the population group in the U.S. born from somewhere around 1976 to around 2000. They are sometimes called 'echo boomers' because some of them are the children of baby boomers. On the other hand, some Generation Y children, especially those born in the late 1980s or later, may be the grandchildren of baby boomers. Other names for this group are the 'Millennials', the 'Internet Generation', and the abbreviated 'Gen Y' or 'Gen Yers'.

MySpace content is gathered under various sections, depending on what the member subscriber follows: the flow of content sharing friends, videos, celebrities and musicians.

Its site has shown a continuous decline in recent years. Between 2008 and 2009, it lost about 18 million members. In September 2010, it had 58 million users. The new version of MySpace Mobile will be launched next month, whilst applications for iPhone and Android will be available by the end of the year.
