MySpace and Justin Timberlake Form a Team; Did the Singer Throw Away His Money?

Jolie du Pre

MySpace and Justin Timberlake have reached a deal. The 31-year-old singer and actor invested money into the social networking site that lost out to Twitter and Facebook and that Specific Media acquired for $35 million. The new focus of MySpace will be music.

Says Timberlake, who will get an executive title at MySpace later this summer, "There's a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect. Myspace has the potential to be that place."

What else is new? That's all MySpace is known for anymore. Ever since scores of people jumped their MySpace ships for Twitter and Facebook, MySpace is left to be the place for musicians to showcase their music and inform fans of their concert dates and other news. Many bands use MySpace as their official website. So isn't MySpace the place where fans have been going anyway when they want to connect with artists?

Maybe not. Although Facebook has grown to mega heights in recent years for not only teenagers but plenty of adults, Twitter is a popular place for many musicians, such as Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber and Katy Perry, to connect with fans, promote new music and promote concert dates. Some of these celebrities, such as Justin Bieber, will retweet or respond to their fans even though their Twitter fans run into the millions.

In the deck of cards, MySpace is no longer King, Queen or even Jack. Time will tell if Timberlake's money and ideas will help to revitalize MySpace to the musicians mega hoped for.

Facebook has more potential at the moment. What's next?

Myspace used to be it. It is only a matter of time until facebook gets replaced. I always prefered myspace due to their blogging abilities over facebook.
