MySpace Social Networking - Not Just for Teenagers

How to Get Started

Hard to believe that a few short years ago no one had heard of Myspace. Now it seems everyone has a Myspace. If you don't it's really easy to get one. They have made it very easy to personalize your own Myspace to fit your own unique style and personality.

Signing up for Myspace is fairly easy. Go to http://www.myspace.com. There is a basic form. You need to put in your name, email address and zip code. You will pick a password at this point for your Myspace account. The next page takes you to where you have to enter the code that you see. This just insures that you are a person and not a computer.

The next few steps in the sign up process will have you upload pictures or add friends. Either of these steps can be skipped. You can easily upload your pictures later in your Myspace. You can add friends at a later time also.

You should at this time check your email. You should have an email from Myspace. It will be asking you to confirm your email address with Myspace by visiting a certain link. Visiting this link confirms your registration and takes you to a page where can easily access your new Myspace page. Just click on the return home and you are taken to your new Myspace.

There are several things you need to do at this step. You will notice that there will be a red box asking you to pick your Myspace URL. This is where you fill where you would like to be found on Myspace. For example, when I was asked to do this step I put in judithldavis. You can now easily find my Myspace at myspace.com/judithldavis. Whatever you put there will be after the myspace.com/. It makes it easy for others to find you.

Next you will notice that you have a message. This is a message from Tom. Tom is also on your friends list. Who is Tom? Well Tom is the Myspace Guru. He is available to answer any of your questions. His Myspace is full of useful information. Take a look around. But feel free to delete him from your friends list if you want to.

Now that you have your Myspace let's work on getting some of the basics up there. Let's start with adding pictures. At the top you will see where it says hello "your name". You should first edit your settings. Here you will find things like privacy settings. You can set it so only those that are friends can see your profile. Read the options and choose the ones that you prefer. When you are done, click on the change at the bottom. To return to the main page choose the HOME option off the top menu bar.

Back at the top let's work on getting some picture up there. Now find the option that says add/edit photos. Use the browse button to find the photos on your computer and then upload them. When you are done you can make one your default. Which ever one is your default is the one people will see when you leave comments or send messages. Just a word of caution here. There is a photo policy. No nudity, violence, offensive material or copyrighted images may be used.

The last thing I want to tell you about is how to change your layout. There are lots of layouts out there just for Myspace. If you google Myspace Layouts you will get plenty of choices. They will give you a snippet of code for the one you choose. To get this to show on your page you need to go to Edit Profile. Here you add that snippet of code in the about me box. You can still add the about me information. It will have no effect on it. Once you have added it you can preview profile. If you like it be sure to choose the option Save All Changes. This gives your Myspace your own personal feel to it.

This is just the beginning of all the great things you can do with Myspace. Meet friends and add them is what Myspace was invented for. But you can start a blog also. You can upload video and have it play right from your main page. Make your Myspace your own. Have fun and enjoy meeting new people.
