MySpace Tutorial: Adding Music and Preventing it from Playing Automatically

Christie Silvers
Music players are very popular additions to the many of the MySpace profile pages that you will see. Even I have music on my MySpace page. Adding music is pretty simple to figure out, but I had problems finding the right spot to prevent the music player from playing automatically each time someone visited my profile. Why would you want to prevent your music player from playing automatically? Well, some people have problems loading a MySpace profile that has the music set to automatically play. It can slow down the loading process of the rest of your page when your music starts playing automatically and some people will even abandon your page when this happens.

Here is a simple step-by-step tutorial on how you can add music to your MySpace profile and preventing that same music from playing automatically each time someone visits your MySpace page.

Adding Music to Your MySpace Profile:

Before you can prevent your music from playing automatically, you have to know how to actually add the music player to your MySpace page. It is a very simple process that only takes a few minutes of your time.

1) Make sure that you are logged into your account. You have to be logged in to perform any changes to your MySpace page.

2) Click on the link on the left side of the page that says "Edit Profile".

3) Once the next page loads you click on the Song & Video Profile link. It's the last link on the right.

4) On this page you will see a link to add a song to your page; click it.

5) On this page there is a search box on the right that you can use to search for an artist.

6) When the search results are displayed, simply click on the link to go to the artist's MySpace profile page.

7) If your chosen artist has available music on MySpace there will be a band music player on their page that lists the music available for use.

8) Next to the song you want to use will be a link to add the song to your profile; click it.

9) Lastly, the next page will ask you if you are sure you want to add the song to your page. Click the yes button and there you go. You now have a song on your MySpace page.

Preventing Your Music Player From Playing Automatically:

If you would like to stop your music player from starting automatically each time a visitor arrives at your MySpace page, then follow the next set of steps.

1) Just like before, make sure that you are logged into your MySpace account and ready to work.

2) Click on the link that says "Account Settings". It's right under "Edit Profile".

3) On this page, scroll down until you see the link that says "Music Settings"; click it. It's the fourth from the bottom.

4) On the next page you will see a blue and white box. Click the box next to the phrase "Disable My Player From Automatically Starting".

5) Lastly, click the button at the bottom that says "Change Settings". You are done! Now your music player will not play unless someone clicks play on it. This can be very helpful for your friends who are still stuck with dial-up or very slow computers. They will thank you for it!

A littler variation on the above is to:

1) Log into your MySpace account and click on the "Edit Profile" link.

2) Go over to the "Song & Video on Profile" link and click it.

3) Under the name of your profile music there will be a link that says "Account Settings>Music Settings"; click it.

4) That brings you to the page with the blue and white box. Click the checkbox that states "Disable My Player From Automatically Starting".

5) Lastly, click the button at the bottom that says "Change Settings".

I hope that you found this tutorial helpful. It really is easy to add music to your MySpace profile and prevent it from playing automatically. Preventing the player from playing automatically can be a great help to people with slow computers or internet connections.

Try a third party like www.soundspire.com. Multiple tracks, any music you want, no autoplay.

I think I will link this to all my connections in Bulletins... I *hate* being forced to hear music. It disrupts the music I already have playing in my computer. Grrrr Arrgh
