Myspace, Youtube, Facebook Inspire "MyTop8: The Movie"

A Year Old Film Company Will Seek Success with Internet Inspired Plot

Wes Laurie
Cashing in on internet "friend" making there will possibly soon be a movie in theatres entitled " MyTop8", as a clever tie-in with the social ranking, status-meter used by the website: Myspace.

Myspace, Youtube, and Facebook are just a few of the social networking sites were one can meet new cyber friends and sometimes see humorous videos. On the video front Myspace has even had a pretend "Myspace Movie" making fun of the site and its different features and affects on culture. David Lehre created that just over 11 minutes flick and one can find it at his website, the first link below or on Youtube with the second link:

However, beyond small internet films, comes a deal for Dean Shull and Shahrook Oomer to produce and direct the comedy: "MyTop8: The Movie".

The movie, which Shull and Oomer wrote together, will center around a guy who decides to take a road trip across the country. This isn't just a random road trip movie, however. The lead role slacker is setting off on this trip in order to meet his cyber friends in person. Along with the friends he is tracking down from sites such as Myspace, Youtube, and Facebook he will also be looking to meet up with a variety of internet celebrities. Sounds like another publicity opportunity for Tila Tequila right? If you're not familiar with internet celebrities she would probably be the up-front and center choice of example to explain. Tila started her career seemingly on Myspace where she was able to take her modeling photos and gain millions of friends which in turn made her a success in most other ventures she promoted, such as music. One can find her at www.myspace.com/tilatequila or in random places throughout mass media from magazines to television shows. Considering the popularity of these social sites and success of people like Tila it sounds like Shull and Oomer may have a winning formula.

Shull and Oomer created their company Catchphrase Entertainment last year with the intentions of using it to set up and film movies geared towards young adult audiences. They recently finished directing the comedic sort-of documentary project "Fanpire", which revolves around a group of "fanboys" on Hollywood Boulevard. Both Shull and Oomer have past producing credits on other films, most notably Oomer in the straight to DVD action film genre. Oomer was a producer of the films "7 Seconds and The Detonator", both starring Wesley Snipes and then he also produced some on "Black Dawn", which is a Steven Segal starring DVD. Shull's producer credit goes with the movie "Waiting..." which was a Ryan Reynolds starring comedy about restaurant waiters, but Shull has also had a small acting career with parts on "Mad TV", "From the Earth to the Moon", and "Secrets of the Animal Kingdom".

Initial shooting work for the film is scheduled to begin next month. The popularity of Myspace and other sites doesn't seem like it will wane anytime soon, so based off of the individuals most know for using said sites and the target audience of the film makers involved with this project, "MyTop8: The Movie" may find itself at the top of many people's "too see" list.

I think it will be a success with quite a wide audience. Will it be a very good flick? Eh, probably not, but I'll probably pay to see it. Innovative idea by the producers, no doubt.
