The lightening flickered shades of golden and orange suggesting the warm subtle glows from the central fireplace that heated the old at least two story house. "Myra" just wanted to be left alone. Scattered with occasional requests for "lines", the dialogue and presentation were believable and well done. The odd humor that was the basis of the show seemed to creep out and infect those waiting their turn on stage.

Rehearsal for "A Bad Year for Tomatoes" written by John Patrick in 1973 and first performed in 1974. It's pivotal character is television actress. Myra Marlowe. Tired of the limelight, Marlowe has retired to a small New England town to write her autobiography. Instead of peace and quiet, she finds herself surrounded by eccentric, nosy neighbors.

To discourage her unwelcome visitors, Marlowe invents a crazy sister, Sadie, drawing on her acting skills to pull off the deception.

All is well until Marlowe stops her sister act. The neighbors and the sheriff think Marlowe murdered Sadie.

Stiles Gunn, first time director, shared how he first came to know "A Bad Year for Tomatoes" in high school. Cancelled before it could be presented, this time he has gotten the chance to follow it through to completion.

Opening night will be 7:30 pm September 17th, at the Betty Long Unrah Theatre on the campus of Umpqua Valley Arts Center on Fir Grove just off Harvard. This marks the first of several chances to enjoy the show.
Seven thirty performances are Sept 17, 18, 19, 25, & 26 and October 2,3, 9 & 10. Matinees will be Sept 20, 27 and Oct 2 & 11 at 2 pm

This is the first play of the 32nd season for the Umpqua Actors Community Theatre, UACT. The 2009-2010 will also feature Generation Broadway, On Golden Pond, Leading Ladies, and Cabaret.
