Mystery Writer Finances Turn into Mystery: Kay Scarpetta Series Author, Patricia Cornwell Sues

Mystery Writer's Real Mystery: What Happened to Patricia Cornwell's $40 Million?

Deborah Oakes, NPS
Best selling mystery writer Patricia Cornwell, author of the Kay Scarpetta series, alleges her financial management firm lost her $40 million due to alleged negligence. The latest celebrity news is that Anchin, Block & Anchin LLP, a blue-chip New York firm, is being sued by Cornwell.

The financial management firm specializes in "privately-held businesses and high net worth individuals," including celebrities such as Robert De Niro. Mystery writer, Patricia Cornwell, alleges the company mishandled not only her own money, but that of her spouse.

Her complaint was filed in Boston federal court and singles out Anchin executives: 1) Ira Yohalem and 2) Evan Snapper. The mystery writer switched to this financial management company when Yaholem's company merged with Anchin in 2005. Her assets have dropped significantly since then.

Yaholem was sanctioned last December for "improper professional conduct" by the Securities and Exchange Commission. He put his own money in a restaurant his accounting firm audited. Apparently, among other things, a $5,000 check from Cornwell's account was written for a bat mizvah gift to Snapper's daughter, whom Cornwell never met.

Until mystery writer Cornwell severed her relationship with Anchin in July, the firm had power of attorney to write checks on her bank accounts. They even file her tax returns without her approval. This arrangement is not all that unusual among wealthy celebrities. Anchin is known to cater to their clients, even "buying and delivering toilet paper" if needed.

Mystery writer remembers advice from Oprah Winfrey

Cornwell remembers visiting with Oprah Winfrey several years ago. Oprah told her then, "I have one guiding principle, always sign your own checks." Mystery writer Patricia Cornwell wishes she had paid attention to this advice. She plans to do so now.

Apparently, Cornwell was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder several years ago and because of this diagnosis, she felt it important for someone to handle her financial affairs. Our mystery writer has a real mystery on her hands now.

Angelina Jolie as Dr. Kay Scarpetta

The latest celebrity news, as we reported in April, is Angelina Jolie just teamed with Fox 2000 to star as medical examiner, Dr. Kay Scarpetta. The Scarpetta series is responsible for current CSI movie and tv shows.

Interestingly, mystery writer Patricia Cornwell's manuscripts were turned down for 7 years because "no one is interested in forensic science." However, the Kay Scarpetta series turned into 16 books starting a trend for years to come.

Yes, they will definitely have to change Angelina's look if she indeed films Scarpetta. I haven't heard anything more so can't say what is in the works at this point.

Hmmn. Angelina Jolie as Kay Scarpetta? Kay Scarpetta is blonde and fair-skinned, a descendant of itlaians from Verona, Italy. Somehow I don't see her (Jolie) as Scarpetta. She's olive-skinned and dark-haired. If this is to happen, gonna take some doin'

I love the books, but this is goofy. The trials of the rich.

I love her work... but avoid scandals involving celebrities. The scandals have nothing to do with my interest in them... in Ms. Cornwell in this instance.... It's just me, I guess!

I enjoy her books very much! How awful that have her trust abused that way.

I didn't know that. Thank you. It might be interesting to read it.

Here's a tidbit about Patricia Cornwell you may not know: she lived a short distance from Ruth Bell Graham, who had compassion for Patricia's struggling family and her. Ruth encouraged Patricia and ministered to her family. Ruth even allowed Patricia to write a book about her with her permission.

I'm not surprised about Cornwell's books having been turned down for 7 years. Publishers are idiots.
