Getting into Myth-Cheif; A Review of the Latest Robert Asprin Novel

Talyseon
Myth-Chief By Robert Asprin and Jody Lynn Nye ISBN: 9780809572779

The latest novel in the Myth Adventures of Skeeve The Magnificent and his friends is a rollicking light hearted adventure, like all the Myth books.

Skeeve is a Klahd. That means he is from the Dimension Klah. His best friend is Aahz, a Pervert. That means he is a demon (dimensional traveler) from Perv. Aahz is big, scaly, and features a full smile of wickedly sharp fangs. All dimensional travelers are someone's Demon.

Skeeve had recently gone off to find himself. After a period of introspection, he felt much more sure and confident in his abilities, so he headed back the Bazaar at Deva, the multiverses' crossroads. There, he dropped in on his friends at M.Y.T.H. Inc. who were delighted to see him. Then he told them he was back in the Bazaar to open up his own business. Suddenly, the reception moved from elated, to awkward. And of course Skeeve has no clue why. As usual, it is Bunny, his secretary/friend/keeper who explains it to him. Skeeve has one of the biggest names in the Bazaar. By coming back, but not at M.Y.T.H. Inc, he is in direct competition with his old colleagues.

Skeeve takes care to only take cases that don't directly overlap his old organizations turf. It took some weeding, but finally, he had an interesting case, Marmel, an imp, was looking for his inheritance, The HoHo Jug, a magical wine producer. His problem; ownership was not clear. His dad left no clear cut will, and had pointed vaguely between him and his sister, Matilda. And he can't find it. Skeeve takes the case.

The late father was an avid collector of...everything, so finding one little magic jug is like finding a needle in a haystack. There is a further complication. Matilda has hired someone to find the jug. Then to make things really interesting, there are mob ties.

As the story unfolds, the truth outs; Matilda hire M.Y.T.H. Inc. to find the jug. She needs it because a thug named Narwickius is threatening to call in a loan in the form of her arms and legs if he doesn't get it. So, if Skeeve wins, Aahz looses, and Marmel's sister ends up in a body cast.

So Skeeve comes up with a plan. He lets Narwickius look for it. Marmel does not want his sister hurt; he had no idea she was indebted to a hood. If Narwickius can find it, he can have it. Well, Skeeve knows just how big that haystack is, and how much work it will involve. So they sit back, and wait. When Narwickius is good and tired, Skeeve points out that this counts as a quitclaim. And, happy days, he figured out where the jug was hidden. So Narwickius goes away, unhappy, but without Matilda's limbs. Marmel and Matilda realize their father meant for both of them to have the Hoho jug, and that just leaves the small matter of Skeeve and M.Y.T.H. Inc working at cross purposes. Skeeve proposes to come back. Aahz points out he left them all in the lurch to "Go find himself." And he, Aahz, is not just going to step aside as President of the company.

So a contest is proposed. Skeeve and Aahz will each take the first client that appears with a big case, and the one who earns the most money, wins. Bunny will be the judge.

Here is what they end up with: Skeeve has a client Princess Hermalaya of Foxe-Swampburg. Her home dimension of Reynardo is a tourist destination, noted for its slow pace and natural beauty. But an infestation of Pinch Flies has ruined the economy. She tried to help her people rebuild, but the Princess has been exiled by her Prime Minister Matfany.

Aahz's client is Prime Minister Matfany of Foxe-Swampburg. His home dimension of Reynardo is a tourist destination, noted for its slow pace and natural beauty. But an infestation of Pinch Flies has ruined the economy, and the former Princess Hermalaya has drained the treasury leaving them broke. He exiled the Princess to staunch the bleeding, but now the treasury is empty, and he is exceedingly unpopular.

What Skeeve has to work with is the Princess, her poise and grace, and her skill and mastery of the Ceremony of Cake. Think if a birthday party were handled with the grace and ritual of the Japanese Tea Ceremony.

Aahz's assets are the natural beauty of Foxe-Swampburg, and their tendency to name things Big Mountain, and the Other Pier. He will sell naming rights.

What can go wrong. If you answered nothing, then you have obviously never read any of these books.

Will the Princess regain her throne? Will the Prime Minister get the operating capital to keep kingdom afloat? And who will end up President of M.Y.T.H. Inc? Most importantly, will Skeeve and Aahz repair their friendship?

Myth Adventure books are not great literature. But they are Great Fun. They have a flow and pacing that yanks you merrily through them. I was on chapter 8 when they told me the store was closing, and would I like to buy that?

Also, I think this may represent a reflection of some of the things in the Author's life. Robert Asprin took a hiatus to deal with personal and professional troubles. The personal problems are personal, but I think the professional problems involve the IRS, which is why he pretty much is a co-author. The IRS has more trouble gobbling up that kind of money.

Anyway, it is great to see him producing again, and great to see he has lost none of the old magic. If you want a light read to lighten your spirits between heavier reads, try this, or any of the Myth books.
