MyWi 4.0 & the NookColor

Rachel Soden

The NookColor is a low cost Android tablet if you mod it to get root access. Similar to jailbreaking, getting root access on a device means you can load anything you want on it. When you take a NookColor to root, you can use an interface such as Helix Launcher or LauncherPro to have a fully functioning Android tablet.

Many people purchase a tablet hoping that they can tether the device to their cell phone. This bypasses the need to purchase a data plan with a carrier. So, you have a jailbroken iPhone with MyWi. Now, you want to use MyWi with your NookColor. What you probably don't know is that the Android based NookColor does not work with an ad hoc network. In fact, you won't even see your MyWi network in your list of Wireless connections.

So what's a person to do? In order to get MyWi to tether to your NookColor, you need it to be in infrastructure (not ad hoc) mode. The MyWi application works with infrastructure on all iPhones that are running greater firmware than 4.2.6. So, before you can tether your MyWi and NookColor, you need to upgrade your firmware, re-jailbreak and then start MyWi.

Firmware Update

Open iTunes on your personal computer. Plug your iPhone into your personal computer with your USB cord. Click the link on the iPhone Summary page to update your firmware. ITunes begins the process of downloading the newest firmware update. Once the firmware is updated (approximately 30 minutes depending on your computer system). Restart your iPhone when you are done upgrading your firmware. You can check to make sure your iPhone is operating on the right firmware by opening the "Settings" application. Go to the "General" line. Tap on the "About" line. Check your firmware version.

Re-Jailbreak Your iPhone

Use a program such as RedSn0w or Sn0wbreeze to re-jailbreak your iPhone. Install the software to your personal computer. Turn off your iPhone and plug it into your computer. Follow the software's on screen instructions to put your iPhone in DFU mode. The software will then jailbreak your iPhone.

Open Cydia on your iPhone. Go to the "Manage Your Account" button on the main screen. Re-install MyWi on your iPhone.

MyWi Connection

Turn on the MyWi software. Tap the Wi-Fi hotspot to toggle the connection on. Turn on your Barnes & Noble NookColor. Click on the "Settings" option. Choose the "Wireless" option from your list of settings. Locate your MyWi connection from the list. Tap on the connection to establish the connection.
