Nabisco Nilla Cakesters: An Excellent Addition to the Cakester Lineup

JRS
OK, OK. I started not to do it, but I just can't help it. I just have to go there...again!

Well, you may recall the rather humorous article I wrote previously when I discovered the then new, Nabisco Oreo Cakesters. I thought the regular ones were kind of on the sweet side, and really just so-so. The chocolate filled ones however, were just heavenly in my opinion.
Since that time I've found that many people seem to dislike Oreo Cakesters. I've heard comments about the cake being waxy or dry, and the filling disgusting. I've also heard them compared to whoopee pies, or Drakes Devil Dogs or some similar snack cake.

Enter in New Nilla Cakesters Soft Snack Cakes by Nabisco! Yep, there is now ANOTHER new flavor of these soft little snack cakes that look sort of like many burgers. While I've only seen them advertised on television once or twice, I thought they would make an excellent addition to the 'Cakester lineup.' I mean, a 'Nilla' wafer filled with a softer version of the Oreo's cream filling? What's not to love? Although, given the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions 'Nilla Wafer's' is that ubiquitous Banana Pudding dessert that everyone creates with the little vanilla cookies. Thus, this lead me to wonder why Nabisco didn't just go a step further and make the cream-filling banana flavored?

Anyhow, I spotted the new Nilla Cakesters on my next shopping trip and immediately grabbed a box because I was sure I'd like them. Now, I'm not sure, it may have been psychological, but the next day when I opened one of the little snack packs, I was sure I not only smelled the Nilla Vanilla Wafer smell, but I also thought I sensed a banana smell and flavor!

The new Nilla Cakesters reminded me somewhat of The cream filling was identical to that of the original Oreo Cakester, but didn't taste as sweet as the original, which was a good thing. The outer cake portion definitely tasted like the 'real' thing, the Nilla Vanilla Wafer cookies. It was also soft and moist. A winner in my book!

Nutrition Facts of Nabisco Nilla Cakester:
Nilla Cakesters come packaged six two-packs in a box. One two-pack of Nilla Cakesters has 10 grams of fat and 220 calories, compared with the 12 grams of fat and 250 calories in the Oreo Cakesters. Nilla Cakesters have 2 grams of protein, 22 grams of sugar, 2% calcium and 2% iron.

Now, I had saved the other snack cake from the 2-pack to eat later. This time was a little different. There was no banana presence and not quite as strong vanilla wafer flavor. It was still a good, acceptable snack, just without a very intense vanilla flavor. The aroma, however, was still very good.

I kept thinking about the Banana Pudding recipe from the Nilla wafer box and wondered if someone had found a way of incorporating these new Nilla Cakesters into a Banana Pudding recipe in place of the regular vanilla wafers. Maybe a Banana Trifle would work better. I searched online for a recipe, but didn't find one. I guess I'll have to suggest to Nabisco, a banana flavored cream filling. While I'm at it, I guess I could inquire about the sure to be coming peanut butter flavored Cakesters. And, might I suggest an adult version, made with Amaretto flavored filling? Possibly they could join up with Starbucks for a coffee-flavored filling. Can you say, 'Caramel Macchiato?'

Hmm, I don't like the chocolate cakesters, so I have my doubts about these. Great review, though!

Great review - but I must agree I could not eat just a few and well 250 cal is a lot for someone who MUST watch their intake.

MMM. Another great review. But 250 cal. are a lot for a snack.
