Nacho Cheesier Doritos VS. UTZ Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips

Sandi Valentine
When you're looking for a nacho cheesy crunch, which chip will satisfy those cravings more completely? Nacho Cheesier Doritos, or UTZ Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips? I have spent years taste testing the two, and am here to share my findings. So, for those of you who are tortilla chip aficionados, as well as those of you who are looking to try a new snack, here are my observations, carefully developed in the lab I call....my couch.

Doritos, which is Spanish for "Little Bits of Gold", are produced and shipped nationwide. Their Nacho Cheesier variety is a classic that I've enjoyed throughout my life. Cheesy and crunchy, they're perfect to dip into your favorite con queso dip, or as a stand alone snack.. This is a crisp, hearty corn chip with great nacho cheese flavor. This classic chip has led to the development of a whole line of Doritos flavors, from Cool Ranch to Spicy Buffalo. However, the Nacho Cheesier variety is a staple in many American households, craved every day nationwide.

Doritos are also known, and loved, by the masses. They've been favored by Jay Leno, and starred in movies such as Wayne's World. They can be found in nearly every grocery store, convenience store, and gas station nationwide. In fact, Doritos is a household name in America today, known for such slogans as "Crunch all you want, we'll make more", to the present day "Snack Strong". Through careful product placement, advertising, and word of mouth, Doritos has become a national best selling brand.

So, what about UTZ brand Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips? Have you ever even heard of the UTZ brand? Well, you probably have if you're from certain parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, or anywhere else within a 400-mile radius of Hanover, Pennsylvania, where they are manufactured. UTZ does not ship to any store that cannot be reached within a day, in order to ensure freshness. This leads to a regional appeal, which is unfortunate, as they have the quality to be a nationwide hit. Sadly, the rest of the nation doesn't know what they're missing. Visitors to the area, after becoming hooked, however, can purchase UTZ brand chips from the company website.

UTZ brand Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips are a regional favorite. They, in my opinion, are even superior to the best selling Nacho Cheesier Doritos brand. They are made from white corn, while Doritos are a coarser yellow corn. They also are very crispy and have a bit more texture. As an added bonus, they often sell for a dollar to a dollar fifty less than the famous Doritos brand tortilla chips. The only drawback I have found is that UTZ makes a thinner, crispier chip, which does not hold up to a thick cheese dip as well as Doritos brand. This, however, is a small price to pay for a far superior taste.

Doritos do also have a far more appealing package - bright, colorful, with a flashy logo. UTZ brand chips come in a relatively plain bag, with the logo prominently displayed at the top of it. However, as I don't intend to eat the packaging, I'm content with my better tasting, less expensive, plainly packaged chips.

So, when the decision is UTZ brand Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips vs. Nacho Cheesier Doritos, in my house UTZ is the clear winner. They are the perfect chips for parties, or just a night noshing on the couch with a favorite video. And, as I happen to live in the delivery area, I am able to purchase them whenever I want. If you live outside of this area, it might be worth a visit to the UTZ website to see what you're missing!

I have no idea. I'm in WV, on the other side of PA, and we find them occasionally. You might try contacting them through their website or a number on their product packaging?

3 or 4 years ago, the A&P store here in Pleasant Valley, NY carried UTZ nacho flavored chips. After purchasing two jumbo bags of them, we can't find them ANYWHERE!!! They were the BEST we ever tasted. We're in the Hudson Valley (near Poughkeepsie, NY), not that far from Pennsylvania. Is there any way to convince them to ship them to this area again? Thank you.
