Is your kitty tearing up your couch? Does your cat scratch up everything in sight, including you? Or perhaps you have a different type of problem, and it's your dog doing the damage, such as tearing up your hardwood floors.
There is a safe, easy, alternative solution. They're called Softpaws, and they're simply plastic caps that go over your pet's nails.
For cats, they offer a great alternative to declawing. Declawing is a brutal procedure that removes the toe up to the first joint. They prevent cats from scratching up furniture as well as kids. Cats can still retract their claws and have no trouble wearing them. Most cats easily tolerate the quick application process.
For dogs, they offer a solution other than restricting your dog to certain parts of the house. They keep dogs from accidentally scratching up wood floors and furniture, or from injuring children by jumping up and scratching them. They are also great for lap dogs, which often tend to accidentally scratch their owner's arms and legs in the process of getting up and down.
Softpaws are fairly inexpensive at only $18.95 for a set of 40. Most cats only need their front claws covered, so one set provides up to four changes. Dogs that are damaging floors will need front and back toenails covered, but for dogs that jump and scratch people, just front toenails will need Softpaws.
Application is not difficult. For animals that will not sit still enough for one person to apply the Softpaws, have one person restrain the cat or dog by laying it on its side, with one hand holding the bottom rear paw, and the other holding the bottom front paw. The hand holding the front bottom paw should also cross the pet's neck, being careful not to apply too much pressure, but using enough to gently restrain the pet.
The second person should clip the tips of the nails, fill the softpaws with the glue provided, and quickly slip one on each toenail. The glue dries quickly and most pets don't even notice the softpaws. They stay on for about a month before needing replacement.
If you don't feel comfortable applying the Softpaws, many veterinarian offices and groomers will apply them for you.
Softpaws come in a variety of fun colors, allowing you to match them to suit your pet's personality. They work great, and are an inexpensive alternative to declawing or ruined furnishings.
Softpaws were developed by a veterinarian, and are non-toxic. Everything you need to apply them comes in the 40-piece set.
