By now nearly everyone knows that there are good carbs and bad (naughty) carbs. What makes the bad carbs so bad?
Bad carbs are all dressed up in sweet, high calorie get-ups that make the blood sugar rise. The rising blood sugar causes our poor pancreas to work harder (if our pancreas has not already been exhausted and ceased to function). Insulin is released to combat the sudden high levels of glucose. The insulin is "cleaning house" in a manner of speaking, quickly mopping up excess sugar from the blood stream and storing it away in the body. This process, combined with the fact that most bad carbs are high calorie anyway means that weight gain is inevitable.
For most people, the sudden release of insulin to combat the high blood sugar means that, after the initial rise, blood glucose levels will plummet. The impact of this fluctuation goes beyond merely making you feel tired or out of sorts. Behind the scenes, every organ is potentially being harmed by this blood sugar see-saw.
Bad carbohydrates are very deceitful. They know we can be easily swayed by appearance. Bad carbohydrates don the enticing, sexy, clothing of preservatives and special flavorings. The clothing has been carefully selected to appeal to our deepest culinary desires. These foods put on sweet cologne and they speak to us in warm, hushed tones. "I am delicious," they say to us. "I won't really hurt you. A lot of people enjoy doing this...it is okay. Don't worry about a thing. No one has to know."
I know very well what the foods say, because I've had a long-term affair with naughty carbohydrates. I still visit them, despite knowing their lies. The knowledge of their deceit, however, has equipped me to better plan my food future.
When we have fallen for their charms and have taken them up on their enticing offer...we eventually find out their true nature. As our body digests bad carbs, their evil unfurls. Bad carbs are not lazy. They go to work immediately. They attack all the organs with a rise in sugar. None are spared.
Naughty carbs lack substance. These bad carbs are vapid hussies/gigilos who just want us for our money. They are all sweet and charming on the outside, but they leave us feeling empty and lost later. They lack fiber, they lack life force.
On one hand we know this, but on the other hand, the brain is fooled. The brain enjoys the euphoria, the rush of glucose upon which it feeds. The temporary bliss makes it forgive and forget the damage done afterwards. When the euphoria plummets, as it always will, the brain simply asks for another fix. Instead of seeing bad carbohydrates as the threat that they are, and pulling us away from them, the brain wants the euphoria again. The brain knows that the naughty carbs will give that feeling again and so we crave them. The more we visit them, the more we want...it is a terrible cycle.
What to do? We have to remember what these dolled up carbs look like so we can spot them on the street. We might not always avoid them, but at least we will know who they are.

Why are naked carbohydrates so much better?
Good carbs do not cause such a sudden rise in blood sugar.
They are full of nutrition that the body needs to function correctly.
They make us feel fuller (because they are higher in fiber) so we are less likely to overeat.
They are usually lower calorie.
Good, wholesome, naked carbohydrates
Whole grains
Fruits
Vegetables
Nuts and seeds
Beans
The occasional fling with bad carbs may not kill you. But when the fling becomes an addictive, torrid affair, the trouble is huge. Lives are ruined. Naked carbs leave your diet and threaten divorce. Remember: to look better naked, eat naked carbohydrates.
