Fifteen Minutes of Fame Nobody Wants

Elizabeth J. Baldwin
It was fifteen minutes of fame that almost nobody wants.

Many years ago I went to a ski resort and took a ski lesson. I did just fine until the instructor said it was time to get on the chair lift. I took a good look at it and flat out refused to get on the thing. I now have proof I was right in doing so.

Yesterday a skier in Vail, Colorado got his fifteen minutes of fame. Almost literally since the incident is reported as lasting for fifteen minutes. It is a fifteen minutes that I'm pretty sure he didn't want.

The mishap was first reported by Vail, Colorado news sources, then Denver, Colorado TV picked it up. From there it was quickly picked up by newspapers and news sites all around the world.

According to Vail Resorts spokesperson, Liz Biebl, the incident occurred late afternoon when the man attempted to board a ski lift.

The fold down seat of the lift wasn't in proper position and the man slipped, caught his pants and ended up hanging upside down exposing some very personal anatomy. Naturally fellow skiers couldn't resist and took pictures of him dangling there. Some of these pictures soon appeared on SmokingGun.com and the story was quickly picked up by news sites both here and in England. I'm pretty sure that the story and pictures are being viewed all over the world.

He hung upside down for about fifteen minutes while the Ski Patrol worked to get to him and then get him safely down. KMGH TV of Denver, Colorado was told that it took approximately seven minutes to detach him from his precarious position.

I suspect there are going to lawyers involved before this is all over. As for the fifteen minutes of fame I suspect someone out there has already figured out just who the man was and will shortly make his identity known to everyone.
