Nalgene BPA-Free Water Bottle Vs. Klean Kanteen

Hard Plastic Vs. Stainless Steel Water Bottles

There are a multitude of water bottles to choose from in any given department store. Factor in all that are available on-line, and it can be an overwhelming decision. The two brands of water bottle that are mentioned most frequently as being durable are the Nalgene BPA-free water bottle and the Klean Kanteen. Here are their pros and cons.

The Nalgene BPA-Free Water Bottle

The Nalgene BPA-free water bottle is available in several sizes and colors. It can come with a choice of bottle toppers, including the closable, sports cap or a screw-on cap. The Nalgene caps are typically fastened to the water bottle with a loop, which is convenient for attaching the water bottle to a back pack or lunch box.

The Nalgene water bottles are transparent, which makes it easy to see any gunk that has built up on the inside that needs cleaning. These hard plastic water bottles are durable and stand up well to accidental falls. They are a sturdy choice for active children.

Nalgene made their water bottles BPA free after the BPA (Bisphenol-A) scare a few years ago. Still, some people are wary of using plastic containers for drinkable liquids, both for health and environmental reasons.

The Klean Kanteen Water Bottle

The Klean Kanteen water bottle is a high-quality, stainless steel water bottle. It is BPA-free because it is not made from plastic. The BPA-free caps, while plastic, are also free from phthalates and other toxins. Like the Nalgene water bottle, the Klean Kanteen is available in many sizes and styles. There is even an insulated Klean Kanteen for hot beverages, as well as a size small enough to fit in most children's lunch boxes.

Unlike the Nalgene, the Klean Kanteen is not transparent. This makes cleaning a bit more of a challenge, especially if liquids other than water are carried in the water bottle. However, cleaning can be accomplished nicely by using a bottle brush or some baking soda and water. These water bottles come in a variety of colors, including the classic, unfinished stainless steel. There are also a wide variety of caps to choose from, depending on need.

While the Klean Kanteen is durable, it does tend to dent easily. A hard fall is likely to cause a few dents and may result in a misshapen bottom, which can make the Klean Kanteen wobble when placed on a flat surface. However, the stainless steel is not subject to cracking or breaking like a hard plastic water bottle would be.

The Nalgene BPA-free water bottle and the Klean Kanteen are both high quality, durable water bottles. Those that are wary of any plastics, both for health reasons and for their toll on the environment, should avoid the Nalgene bottles. Likewise, those that would be upset with dents and dings in a stainless steel water bottle should reconsider getting a Klean Kanteen.
