Name Your Son After a Michigan Wolverine Hall of Famer

He was Once a Michigan Wolverine; Inspiration

Viktorya Hale
You thought of naming him after your husband, your dad and even your brother. You just can't seem to come up with a name for your little man. You need some sort of inspiration. You need a reason for naming him. Ideas run through your mind and for some reason football comes to mind. Perhaps because the NFL draft is under way here soon. Not much into the NFL, but there are some good football players who have made those NFL teams who they are today.

The Michigan Wolverines have made some great NFL stars and coaches. How about naming your son after a NFL Hall of Famer who attended Michigan and/or played for the Wolverines.

George Allen - He is a former Wolverine who coached for the Rams and the Redskins. Back in 1966, the Rams were on a 7 season losing streak until Allen came on the scene. That following year, the Rams won NFL's Coastal Division. That is the year that he also won Coach of the Year, as well. George is a Greek name that means Earth worker.

Dan Dierdorf - This St. Louis Cardinal won all pro five times. He was also elected at six pro bowl games. he played tackle and guard, then finally settled for right tackle. It didn't stop there either, he was a great blocker as well and equally good at passing and running plays. Dan means God is my judge and is of Hebrew origin.

Len Ford - This player is well known for his leaping and one hand grabs. Not to mention his 67 receptions in two years. This Michigan Wolverine went on to play for the Cleveland Browns. Because of Ford, the Browns redesigned their entire defensive strategies, to take full advantage of his playing talent. This is an American name and it means brave as a lion.

Benny Friedman - Well known for his 11 touchdown passes while he was still a rookie. Not to mention he was ahead of the league with a four consecutive years of record touchdown passes. He was considered a triple threat player with the ability to run, pass and kick. This is a Hebrew name and it means son of my right hand.

Bill Hewitt - This is a former Chicago Bear and Philadelphia Eagle. He is very well known for his super quick defensive charge. He also played without a helmet until they changed the rules. He led the Bears to the 1933 NFL title. This is an English name that means strong willed warrior.

Elroy Hirsch - Also known as crazylegs, this football player was well known for his revolutionary three end offense. He scored 399 points and made 60 touchdowns in his career. This name means the King and it from a French origin.

Tom Mack - He became a Ram in the 1966 draft. At that time there was only one other rookie on the team. This left guard was all NFL five times and all NFC eight times. This Greek name is known to mean purity and twin.

Ralph Wilson Jr. - Wow how awesome to know that this man was one of the founders of the AFL. He was also owner of the Bills and during that time they won four straight AFC championships. Ralph means wolf counsel and is an English name.

Hail to the victors is what I say (although they have been slacking the past few years), you may still find some inspiration from the team. These are the men who have went beyond being a Wolverine and making history in the NFL Hall of Fame.

One of the reasons I chose UofM and Cubs were the fact that there was enough Hall of Famers for each team. A lot of them had just a couple.

Nice theme here ... though I think I'd pick the Nebraska Cornhuskers as a starting point. :-)

Great ideas. It is so positive to name a child after someone who is a positive role model. I didn't know that George was Earth in Greek.

I drew the line when my husband wanted to name our son after an Oklahoma Hall of Famer. It was the one time, I considered leaving him. Just kidding about the leaving part.
