Naming Your Baby a Unique Name

Pat Bartels
I made a comment on an article about naming baby in which I said, "Naming a baby should take thought. I hate when parents choose stupid names for their kids. Think of what your child has to go through all their lives." Being a curious kind of person (curious in nature not in looks), I decided to look for what is called "alternative" names for babies.

The article I am referring to was written by another Associated Content writer. Her name is Judy Kaelin and here's a link to her article How to Choose the Best Name for Your Baby. Now, she makes a lot of sense to me. She mentions that you should think carefully about what you name your baby.

Before I go any further, though, let me clarify something. There are alternative names for babies, and then there are unique names for babies. Let me give you an example of a unique name. I think that Dannica is a unique name. It's something that is different, but would readily be accepted by the main stream. I think that's a nice name. However a think that naming a child something like Siren is, well to put it bluntly, stupid.

Remember the song by Johnny Cash, My Name is Sue? The song is about a boy named Sue. If you've never heard the song, look it up. I remember when I first heard the song. I thought it was funny. Who would ever name their boy Sue?

We are not given a choice about our names. Our parents have the task of assigning names to us. Whatever you do as a parent, please...please think about what you are doing when you name your baby. If you think your child's name will make them stronger if they have to endure ridicule, go ahead and do it. Give them an alternative name. Children have a hard enough time growing up in these times without having to be teased constantly about their name.

One of the first articles that I wrote was called, Popular Baby Names. In that article I told about the searchable social security database where you could find out what the most popular baby names are for different years. It will also tell you the least popular or seldom used names. You might want to check out that database if you are having a difficult time coming up with a name.

All I'm saying is think before you name your child. This is an extremely important decision. Do we need to have a Supreme Court Justice by the name of Liar O'Neal? That kind of name might be a bit of a hindrance to a person's career. Although, names can be changed.

I'm fascinated that the Native American tradition 'of old' was to wait until the child was a toddler before naming him/her. The names they chose were more defining than names of today. My pen name "Magena" means moon. I selected it with some thought that the moon is such a reflective orb and I do a lot of reflecting.

    Great read, and good advice!

Oh so true - my sister's name is Dawn -- except not with the traditional spelling. The spelling is very close to the boy's name Duane and in high school she was scheduled in a boy's gym class each year (this is back when gym classes were separate based on gender and the boys swam in the nude). That was quickly corrected but had to be handled each year of high school -- just an example of the type of issues that occurred.

Oh my goodness, it's so true. My husband and I have been looking for the ideal baby name since before we were engaged (even though we have no plans of having any soon). We want a name that our child can be proud of.

So true - parents don't realize that when naming a baby, that name will stick with the person even through their professional career.

My granddaughter was named with a man's name, spelled with a variation, but pronounced just like the boys name. Not good. But they didn't ask me.

Naming a child is certainly an important responsibility - because they're stuck with it for life. Great work!

All of my life my name has been spelled wrong. To the point that for a while, I was signing my name: Michele with one "L" Cheers :)
