Message in a Haunted Mansion is one of the shorter Nancy Drew games but it still has different puzzles, secret entrances and escapes that can be confusing. The haunted mansion officially has two floors but in reality the number is closer to five. There are the first and second floors. There is also and attic and a basement. In the basement is another area that leads to an area below.

How do I open the stuck bedpost?

When the game first begins, Nancy will notice that a bedpost has a secret area and although it is unlocked, it is stuck. To open the bedpost, find a paint scraper on the first floor where work on the mansion is being completed. Use the paint scraper and the post will open for Nancy.

What do I need to do with the Bandits Treasure music sheet?

The music sheet is found in a locked writing desk in the basement. Once you have the music sheet in hand, take a close up look and notice that some notes are darker than others in a highlighted fashion. The highlighted notes are B, E, G, A, G. In the basement Nancy will find a piano, play these notes from the music sheet. From left to right starting at the first available key count and then click on these piano keys: 6, 2, 4, 5, 4. A section of the piano opens and Nancy is able to get a piece of paper. The paper is full of square holes and it needs to be taken to the attic. Once in the attic, use the paper with the holes on the Bandits Treasure music sheet. The letters that show up in the square holes will spell a word.

How to put out the Parlor fire?

At a certain point in the game after Nancy gets a threatening note shoved under her door, go downstairs to the parlor where Nancy uses the phone. Once in the parlor, the box of old papers will be on fire. To put the fire out go to the cabinet that has flowers on the door. Open the door and there will be a fire extinguisher that Nancy can use. After the fire Nancy can check the box to see which papers were burned in the blaze.

How do I open the grate in the basement fireplace?

In the afternoons when Charlie is not around, go to the basement area. If Nancy has found the crowbar and lamp, she can use them to open the grate in the fireplace. Once in the secret area, make sure the lamp is on or Nancy will die from a fall in the dark. Go to the end of the passageway and search through every bit of junk.

How do I fix the dumbwaiter?

Even though Nancy is supposed to be a guest and help solve a case, Rose continually asks her to do some work around the mansion. To get the dumbwaiter working, take the broken iron that Nancy found earlier and tie it to the cut rope of the dumbwaiter on the first floor. Run up to the second floor and it should be working completely.
