Nancy Kerrigan in the News: Makes Brother a Famous Jailed Drunk

The celebrity news of the day is that Nancy Kerrigan's brother is going back to jail. Mark Kerrigan is on his way to living in a caged cell for failing a mandatory sobriety test.

The fact that Mark and Nancy Kerrigan's father, Daniel Kerrigan passed away due to cardiac dysrhythmia is a sad matter. The idea that it could have been caused because of a fight between Daniel Kerrigan and his son, Mark Kerrigan is awful. Making the situation even worse is that Daniel Kerrigan may have been intoxicated during the said event. In other words, Mark Kerrigan's addiction to alcohol may have very well caused his father's death.

Everything about this story is tragic. We all have our problems, and I think pretty much of all us wish that our problems only hurt ourselves and not our loved ones. Most often, it is our loved ones that are hurt. Sad as it is when I kept reading the news today, there was one thought that stuck in my head. Why is this major news? What makes this a huge story?

The answer is Nancy Kerrigan.

That might be the saddest part of all of this. The reason we are talking about this news is because once upon a time, Nancy Kerrigan was the most famous ice skater in the United States. A lot of the younger generation still might not know how she is. Until of course you say, "You know, the ice skater that Tonya Harding sent a hitman after to injure?" That is pretty much a truthful statement, anyways. I would look up exactly how it went down, but I just don't care. It's not because I'm a heartless human being, which I might sometimes be, but that's not the point. The point is, it doesn't matter why Nancy Kerrigan became famous. What matters is how Mark Kerrigan became so famous that he is the subject of maybe the most looked up news story of the day.

Why is Mark Kerrigan such hot news right now? It isn't because he failed a sobriety test. It isn't because his personal struggles might have directly led to the death of his father. Mark Kerrigan is major news today for one reason. That reason is he is the brother of Nancy Kerrigan.

Mark Kerrigan isn't the brother of Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian or Justin Bieber. He is the brother of a celebrity that reached her fame years ago and has barely been mentioned in past decade. Yet, when something bad happens to somebody that is even related to that person, it is major news.

Welcome to the news desk, Mark Kerrigan. Where it doesn't matter how much more tragic things are happening. It only matters if you are famous, or in his case, related to somebody famous. Sadder yet, is it doesn't even matter if you a currently famous. Because once you had your day in the sun, be sure enough that when something even remotely interesting happens, you will be newsworthy in an instant.
