Nancy Pelosi Tours Berlin Wall Monument at Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio

The Berlin Wall Monument and Freedom Center Draw Cincinnati Visitors

Carol Rucker
Cincinnati's National Underground Railroad Freedom Center has been busy lately; On June 23, a Berlin Wall section arrived for placement into it's new permanent home on the museum grounds, and on June 26, Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, came to call. Each event was exciting in itself; but the two together made for a thrilling week in the Downtown Cincinnati museum just beyond the banks of the Ohio River.

Photos taken by National Underground Railroad Freedom Center staff show Speaker Pelosi as she toured the museum exhibits, sat in on a video dramatization of an escaped slave experience and stood next to the Berlin Wall section that was a recent gift from the city of Berlin, Germany.

Not just a Museum Visit For Speaker Pelosi

The visit was positive PR for the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. A few staff members illustrated their enthusiasm by tweeting a "#guesswho" message and withholding the identity of the weekend's special guest pending posting of photos to facebook. It would have made an even greater Freedom Center public relations story had Speaker Pelosi flown into Cincinnati just to take a look at the new Berlin Wall Memorial; but she was actually in Cincinnati for unrelated reasons. Ms. Pelosi was here as a special guest of nationally renowned attorney, Stan Chesley, who was hosting a Democratic fund raising event on Saturday evening.

Nancy Pelosi Arrived Too Early for Protesters

A few other people were looking forward to Speaker Pelosi's visit as well. A NING social website run by a group calling themselves American Liberty Riders and Sons of Liberty Riders scheduled a "Pelosi Ride and Protest," calling for interested parties to "send a message" by "lining the right of way" at the intersection of Camargo and Givens Roads. They cited this as part of the route to Stan Chesley's home in Cincinnati's affluent Indian Hill suburb.

A June 27, 2010 update posted on the protester's website expressed disappointment that Speaker Pelosi's entourage, two dark-windowed vehicles escorted by two Cincinnati police officers, arrived a bit earlier than anticipated and "floored the gas and sped through us..." They estimated 40 to 50 protesters had arrived to line the streets as she passed.
