Nancy Pelosi's Idea of Economic Stimulus: Why America Can't Afford It

The Importance of Being Fruitful and Multiplying

J. Paul Norton
I think Nancy Pelosi has it wrong. It amazes me that we have come to a point in our nation's history that one of our respected leaders would actually think that putting money towards family planning services in order to reduce cost for our state and federal government would actually stimulate the economy. As the House Republican leader, John Boehner, told Fox News: "Regardless of where anyone stands on taxpayer funding for contraceptives and the abortion industry, there is no doubt that this once little-known provision in the congressional Democrats' spending plan has nothing to do with stimulating the economy and creating more American jobs."

What this is about is a growing disregard for the value and intrinsic worth of life in this country. But I think the record of this nation's history proves that life and liberty are very much worth fighting for. So much so, that our forefather's pledged their lives for those of us that had yet to be born. Isn't that what the Declaration of Independence and Constitution say? Isn't that really our birthright? To live with vigor; fully defending the rights of those that will follow after us?

When did we become a nation where the extensive genealogies and lengthy family trees of our great grandparents could become anathema? For a nation that has its roots firmly planted in Judeo/Christian beliefs, we have forgotten one of the earliest commands from Scripture. In Genesis 1:28 we are told to "Be fruitful and increase in number;" How then can there be any positive outcome based on the curtailing of a practice that we are commanded to do?

Nancy Pelosi herself is a mother of 5 and has 6 grandchildren. Is it a bit hypocritical for her to sanction the funding of programs, who in their inherent design will deny others the joy associated with a growing family, just because economically it seems like a good idea to promote contraception as the answer? But, as Tom Leonard reports, she could not even "spell out exactly how fewer babies would help the economy."

The United States of America is a nation that has uniquely embraced democratic principles. The people of this country over the course of this nation's history have used their freedoms, ingenuity, and work ethic to become a great world power. These principles need to be commended to the next generation so they too can fight injustice, shield the weak, and uphold the morals that undergird human dignity. As a country then, it only seems natural to encourage our people to embrace our forefather's principles and continue to birth a people who will not let those ideals die.

Nancy Pelosi has it wrong. Our economy will not be served by the Democrat's spending plan. The economy will be served by a commitment to life and the birth of a new generation. The same generation that will be this world's leaders. This country has a wonderful legacy, but if we choose to follow shortsighted ideas to save us from calamity, we will be cheated out of an even more brilliant future.

As it says in Psalm 127:3-5, taken from The Message, "Don't you see that children are God's best gift? The fruit of the womb his generous legacy? Like a warrior's fistful of arrows are the children of a vigorous youth. Oh, how blessed are you parents, with your quivers full of children! Your enemies don't stand a chance against you; you'll sweep them right off your doorstep."

Amen! I was stunned that one of the first things Obama did was to reserve the Mexico City policy. We've got no business encouraging abortions in other nations. Well said.
