Naproxen Side Effects

Scott Kessman
It's important to your health to recognize Naproxen side effects. While this is an effective medication for reducing inflammation, especially for osteo or orthopedic injuries or conditions, there are some potentially dangerous side effects that can cause more harm than the original condition.

For the most part, the gastrointestinal problems reported are not only the most common side effects of Naproxen, but are also the most likely to be well managed with time and dosing adjustments. Many people experience almost no symptoms while others experience intense symptoms or symptoms that are so constant and persistent that the medication is no longer effective.

This would include symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, intestinal distress, gas, headache dizziness, sleepiness, nasal congestion, headaches, heartburn, and constipation. Most of these side effects will be joined by at least one more. Some patients initially experience all of these side effects but are still able to adjust to the medication within a few weeks.

Severe side effects are another story. Symptoms from an allergic reaction will include facial and throat swelling, hives, inability to breathe normally, and in rare cases anaphylactic shock. Other severe side effects are likely to include sudden chest pain that is not deduced as heartburn, an increase or decrease in urination, stools that are black or tarry, stools that are bloody, and heart rate difficulties. Heart rate problems can be an irregular heart beat or a heart rate that is exceedingly high above normal.

Other serious Naproxen side effects that require instant medical attention include confusion, dark urination, depression, fainting, weakness that is located throughout one side of the body, constant sore throat, arm or leg numbness, sudden gain in weight, the inability to breathe normally, or unusual weakness, fatigue, or bleeding.

It is possible to experience severe mental changes when taking Naproxen. These changes can be anything from a marked increase in aggression, a feeling of constant euphoria, or sudden and rapid mood changes. In very rare cases, suicidal or homicidal thoughts can and actions can occur.

Anything that can be an indication of a stroke or a heart attack should be taken very seriously and dealt with immediately. Coffee ground vomit or the skin or eyes turning yellow can be serious signs of an inability to tolerate the medication.

Naproxen has introduced millions of people to pain free living, and has been around long enough to have a well established reputation. Report all Naproxen side effects, especially when just starting out with your dosing.
