NARS Single Shadow in Fathom

Glittery in a Good Way

Layla A.
With NARS' huge price tags, it is a treat for me when I have a little extra cash to splurge on a new product, since they are such good quality. I was lucky enough to swap for the item I'm reviewing today, and am so glad I did.

COLOR

Fathom is a pretty typical idea, pink with silver glitter, however NARS has somehow managed to make it extremely unique. It is a pale pink-peach and has very intimidating glitter in the compact. However, when used, the glitter is only seen when the light hits your face just right. It's gorgeous! I'm still figuring out how to use this color, as it is almost too dark to be a highlighter and too light to go in the crease. I have tried it as a lid color, and it was beautiful. This color is subtle enough that it will go with a lot of other shades, or look great by itself.

FORMULA

NARS' eyeshadow formula is why they are such a superior brand. There shadows are smooth, soft, highly pigmented, blend easily, and stay on forever. When I swatch Fathom, it is almost as bright without a primer as with one. I find that NARS shadows can be tricky to use if you are working with bold colors, however, they are very easy to use if you go for a more subtle color like Fathom. Fathom does have glitter, but otherwise, it is a matte finish. I, personally, am not a fan of the matte finish in general, but NARS is my exception because their matte shadows are just as easy to use and blend as any other finish.

FUNCTIONALITY

To me, Fathom is very useful. It can be used for basically anything in your eye makeup routine. I have used Fathom as a highlighter, a lid color, and even a crease color with a neutral eye and it has looked amazing in every place. I think this is a great shadow to have because it is extremely portable and so easy to use.

PRICE

This is where NARS items become less practical. If you are the kind of person that likes to have tons of colors, I would turn away right now as it will cost you tons of money. If you are the kind of person that finds one color and uses it every day, I would say NARS is perfect. NARS single shadows retail for $22 at Sephora stores, sephora.com, narscosmetics.com, or wherever you can find NARS products. For $22, you get 2.2 grams of product, which is not bad at all compared to a MAC shadow. However, when compared to an Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadow, it is pretty pricey.

PACKAGING

The packaging for Fathom is no different than anything else NARS releases, in a black compact with the white NARS logo on the front. The compact closes really well and it is small enough to have anywhere, practically. It feels very solid and when I have dropped one, nothing happened. NARS packaging is simple yet chic, compact yet trustworthy.

FINAL OPINIONS

I love this eyeshadow and would probably pay retail price for it if I had to. As I have stated before, I think NARS is great for people who like one color every day, but not a stellar option when it comes to having lots of colors, especially on a budget. These shadows do last a long time, since you do get 2.2 grams of product and it will not be a constant purchase you have to make. So far, I adore NARS as a brand and recommend them highly. Fathom is a gorgeous color and even if you don't want to buy it, you should go to a Sephora store and try to swatch it because the way the light catches the glitter is unlike any other shadow I own.
