A group of scientists from around the world worked together for several years to create this simulator. The goal is to take a group of scientists in place them in the simulator for 520 days. Each astronaut who volunteers will have to live in the simulator for this time and will be studied rigorously by all of the scientists. The sole goal of course being to see how the astronauts react to the simulated journey and if it is possible for them to survive such a trip.
The simulation will go as follows. Each of the astronauts will take a 250-day trip to Mars. They will then be given 30-days to explore the simulates Mars surface. Once this time passes by, the astronauts will then have to take a 250-day trip back to the shuttle. The simulation will use gravity simulators and heat simulators as well. Previous studies have been conducted but none on this grand of scale. It will be interesting to see how things pan out for each of the astronauts.
NASA has been working towards creating a full mission for quite some time now. They have successfully conducted 14-day and 105-day long missions. However, none of these times are realistic because it would take 520 days for an actual mission to be conducted. This is why the big simulator had to be created to offer the scientists the most realistic results that they could possibly get. If they are able to make it through the full test it could be a major achievement towards making the trip a reality.
It appears that the organization is once again being hush about what type of new technologies that they have created to make the simulation as realistic as possible. Whatever it is that they have created it has to be important enough to test. New technology is constantly being created by NASA to make their space dreams become a reality. The success of this simulation is very important and I will keep you posted on what types of strides they make.
