NASA Langley Scientists in Hampton, Virginia Study Toyota Acceleration Problem

The Obama administration has called on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as it intensifies its investigation of the unintended acceleration of many Toyota vehicles that has led to substantial vehicle recalls. NASA Langley Research Center scientists in Hampton, Virginia will help the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration (NHTSA) determine if the problem is an electronic one. By examining computers within the vehicles, the scientists will determine what signals were sent in order to decipher why the cars accelerate on their own. The nine NASA scientists will also investigate whether electromagnetic forces outside the cars have an effect on the computers. During their study the scientists will determine whether the electrical system is designed and working as intended. Individual components will be tested in the same way NASA has previously examined components on the shuttle, International Space Station, and the Hubble Telescope. The NASA scientists are working to complete their initial findings by the end of the summer.

A separate study by the National Academy of Sciences focuses on the problem of acceleration, including, software, computer hardware design, electromagnetic interference, and human effort, across the entire motor industry. This broader problem was raised by congressional lawmakers during recent hearings on Toyota Motor Corporation. According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the Academy study will take approximately 15 months and will "recommend how the government can ensure the safety of vehicle electronic control systems." www.Time.com

Preliminary results of the two studies will cost $3 million, including the cost of purchasing the vehicles that have allegedly unintentionally accelerated. Upon completion of the studies, the NHTSA will determine whether a formal investigation into Toyota is necessary.

Three separate but related vehicle recalls occurred at the end of 2009 and at the start of 2010. Toyota has recalled more than 8.5 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles worldwide, including 6 million in the United States. Some of the models included in the massive recall include: Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, RAV4, Sequoia, and Tundra. www.toyota.com

To determine if a vehicle has been recalled, go to InternetAutoGuide.com, then select a year and model to read auto recall reports that include defects, problems, and solutions from the manufacturer.
