NASCAR Cup Series - Challenge Your Top 10 Picking Skills

Pick Your NASCAR Nickname and Lets Drive for the Checkers

Ben Brumitt
Do you like to pick the top 10 from week to week? I have a system that is accurate and can challenge you to polish up your game by comparing your own stats week by week.

There is a maximum of 150 points and the winner has a maximum possibility of 22 points if you pick him first. Use this list below or make it yourself on Microsoft Excel.

First, write down the finishing order as shown below. (From the Richmond race) Don't change the column labeled 'Fin' that wont change.

BOX SCORE below

Your Points Points
Driver Fin Pick Difference Possible Earned
Johnson 1st 8th 7 22 15
Stewart 2nd 3rd 1 19 18
Ragan 3rd 18 0
Gordon 4th 7th 3 16 13
Sauter 5th 15 0
Hamlin 6th 2nd 4 14 10
Harvick 7th 5th 2 13 11
Kahne 8th 12 0
Ku Busch 9th 6th 3 11 8
Yeley 10th 10 0

Now there are three things you need to do;

First, put your picks in column labeled 'Pick". Ex; I picked Johnson 8th so I put an 8 in his column.

Second, subtract your pick and the drivers actual finish. Ex; Johnson finished 1st but I picked him 8th, that is a difference of 7 points. No matter how you subtract, keep all sums a positive number.

Third, take Johnson's POSSIBLE POINTS and subtract the difference (7 pts), that gives me 15 POINTS EARNED. Do this for all 10 drivers and add up your points.

If you want a copy on Microsoft Excel I can e-mail you one.

STATS:

I had 6 correct picks for 75 points, not a stellar week. I picked Earnhardt Jr 4th and Edwards 9th, but they fell out despite running good.

I had this system in place at work before I got let go for tardiness. We had six weeks in at the beginning of the season and a few people had 8 picks, and the highest score was 107 points. Leader goes by total picks first, then by points.

I'm sure that it can be beat so give it a try, keep track and if you want send me your picks and maybe I will have time to calculate it. Maybe we could start a league for fun still. No cash, just the dash.

I'm sorry for the way the article reads, I cant straighten the box score like I need to. I can send the actual Microsoft Word document so you can read it better.

I used my system for only 6 weeks at my last place of employment so it needs more research. Three people had 8 of 10 picks and the highest score was 107 out of 150.

It is a very accurate system. For example, last week at Richmond I picked Johnson 8th, but he finished first. I was 7 spots off so that is 7 points off of a possible 22 points for the first place driver. I netted 15 points for that pick.

A 10th place driver can only net you a possible 10 points, 9th place can net you a possible 11 points, 8th place a possible 12 points and so on. It rewards more points for 1st thru 3rd place, with 22 the most for a first-place pick.

Interesting. When I was bartending we tried to do something like this. Just as you would do for football, picking squares and scores, for the races we picked finishes and points. It's been a while so I couldn't tell you specifics but it was fun.

Sounds like a very interesting prospect for the Nascar fans, and you put a lot into the article.
