Dale Jr. probably gets most of his fans from his father. As you can see here Dale Earnhardt was a first class NASCAR Hall of Fame member and was one of the most popular race car drivers of all time.
Some of the popularity that Dale Earnhardt enjoys probably comes from him being a young good looking guy. But if Dale Jr. does not start winning NASCAR races, then his popularity will plunge eventually. People love a winner and so far Dale Earnhardt Jr. hasn't won anything with one of the best racing teams, Hendricks.
With the economy bad NASCAR needs to attract fans anyway it can and Dale Jr. could garner more attention to the sport if he wins. Even people pulling against Jr. help the sport when they support their own favorite drivers.
Living in North Carolina, I know NASCAR fans and how loyal they are. I know many fans like my son, Adam support the sponsors of their favorite drivers by buying their products when they can.
NASCAR needs Dale Jr. to win races to keep fans interested in him and thus the sport. In a best case scenario for racing, Dale Jr. would be able to compete with Jimmy Johnson who has won 4 NASCAR titles in a row. If Jr. could compete for a NASCAR title this would stir up even casual fan's interest in stock car racing. Fans want somebody to step up and compete with Jimmy Johnson who is unpopular with many traditional NASCAR fans. Who better than the son of a Hall of Fame Driver to compete with the "Pretty Boy" Jimmy Johnson?
If Dale Jr. continues to disappoint with Hendricks, it will be even harder to resurrect his career. After all if he can't win with a Hendricks team it will be a shock if he wins on another team or as a team owner himself. Of course if he does leave Hendricks, Dale Jr. will leave some of the pressure to win, behind him.

Post a CommentI agree with Nancy. Jr. does need to win for sure, but he sure has some impossibly big shoes to fill, as Big "E" was the best that ever strapped on a car. I think Jr. can win, he just needs a little confidence and a little luck, He's had a few good runs.
Now that you mention it, he has tons of merchandise. Some of it doesn't look like a good fit, but I guess somebody is buying it.
It's true: he needs to win.
Good luck to him, keep the legend going!
Hopefully Earnhardt does some winning... also like to see Gordon knock Johnson off his pedestal.
Sounds like another case of Tiger Woods selling the game of golf. Without them "in it" the sport suffers. Good article.
Ditto Ms. Hunt!
I am routing for Dale Jr.!
I think Jr. struggles with his father's shadow.
Good points. As you said, everyone likes winners. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I do know that Earnhardt is their biggest draw as evidenced by his merchandising sales. NASCAR and fans need him to turn the corner with some wins.
